Review

"Shirley Hughes has created a new kind of non-fiction with this combination of sketchbook and history book . . . The ecleticism of the drawings inescapably places the grave and the frivolous side by side, but the book offers not only a useful timeline but also a valuable guide to how history used to look" (Nicolette Jones The Sunday Times)

"There is much to reflect on . . . This is a fascinating book for children and adults" (Kate Agnew Guardian)

"A fascinating personal selection . . . One for the whole family to talk about" (Carousel)

"Richly narrative paintings and finely observed line illustrations are interwoven with fascinating details, capturing the atmosphere of an extraordinarily exciting era" (Good Book Guide)

"Brings the past to life in a new way" (Julia Eccleshare Front Row, BBC Radio 4)

I have just ordered this as a school prize for someone in my class. It is absolutely stunning! The scrapbook pages are a real insight into the era and the paintings are amazing.

For those who have lived through part of the era covered, it must bring back loads of memories. It would be an ideal coffee table book! For those of us who have heard about it, or have studied it, it is a delight!

Buy it, and enjoy.

(By the way - note added later - the youngsters who received it as a School prize have reported back that they loved it and spent a good deal of time perusing the fascinating pages!)

This follows the history of the 20th century with wonderful illustrations of social life. Shirley's work centres on people and vividly conveys their feelings. Many of these focus on the meanings and feelings around meals - from a mug of tea in the trenches to Sunday lunch with the in-laws. Also specially interesting to people who know the area around Liverpool as Shirley is a daughter of T J Hughes of the department store and her work is coloured by knowing this coast.
A delight.

I bought this book originally for my (adult) sister who is an artist. Then purchased another for myself! It's a beautifully produced book with interesting information on the decades of the period. The little sketches are a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars a brush with the past 27 April 2008
By Maryellen Rumsey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
this is a wonderful book! I used it as "another reference" for a talk I gave to a large women's literary group entitled," Woman Illustrators of Children's Books". Shirley Hughes does endearing and heartwarming work ----- ask most any picture reading Mom and Dad not to mention their lucky children. This book took you from Ms. Hughes's childhood (it is basically an autobiography) through to the present concerning her start in illustrating and inserted along the way are typically wonderful double page Shirley Hughes illustrations covering the time span from approximately 1927 until now. Delightful! Especially when you grew up in that timeframe yourself! I'm ten years younger but experienced much the same history. A delightful read and the illustrations alone make it a book to treasure. Now what I REALLY want is one of her prints-----I'm saving my pennies!

Anyone familiar with Shirley Hughes children's books will love this book. Not only do you learn about her life but a wonderful exposure to lots of details of life in England and western world during this time period. My daughters 24 to 12 years old have enjoyed reading and I wish to share with my grandchildren!
