Mama Rosin are a Swiss trio who serve up a rough and ready soup of Zydeco and Cajun - with a punk sensibility - which reminds me a bit of G. Love & Special Sauce. They keep the songs short and there is lots of variety here, with the basic sounds of drums, guitar and accordion being leavened with the guitar varing from acoustic to electric and all points in between. The songs alternate between fairly authentic sounding cajun as in "Le two-step de l'haricots", to the bluesy "Eh ti monde", to the cover version of the Movie Star Junkies' "Dead Love Rag". The cover is a spoof of Wahol's Velvet Underground LP cover and this is a hint that the band have a sense of humour that is evident in much of their music. Download "Le pistolet" to get a flavour of their high-energy ragged roots exuberance.

After seeing these guys live in 2010 I have to say I'm disappointed with this cd. I guess this kind of music lends itself to dancing around trying to keep your pint from spilling and maybe a third of it could be considered as stirring such memories but there is much too much of it at a slower pace. The other reviewer is correct in the sense of humour they bring to the stage together with an infectious enthusiasm, unfortunately not enough of that is evident here-le pistolet and bon tempe roulet are the high spots, and dead love rag is also effective. I'll be keeping it as a reminder of the gig, but there are tracks that just don't hold interest, and even a couple I can't listen to. It opens with a pretty dull riff over which there is a lot of French muttering-maybe hysterical if you know the language but it would have to be to justify it as the opener-the sound is pretty harsh on several tracks too which doesn't add to the mix as it were. All in all not enough energy or imagination. A pity.
