Product description

Product Description

A new release from the series of Metropolitan Munich programs.

For the first time after 37 years, Celibidache returned to the podium of the Berliner Philharmoniker for a reconciliatory concert. This was to be his final concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker before his death. It is also the only video recording of Celibidache conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker.

The Blu-ray Disc includes the Documentary 'The Triumphant Return' directed by Wolfgang Becker: The film documents the maestro Celibidache's reunion with the Berliner Philharmoniker after 38 years, and includes extensive footage from the rehearsals of Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 and interviews with former orchestra members.

Review

Celibidache… paints a noble musical canvas on the broadest possible scale, one which convinced Brucknerians will find engrossing. Nothing is forced and no detail of internal balance and phrasing is overlooked… it is unquestionably a great recording taken on its own terms. The Berliners play like angels, the performance has never looked or sounded finer, and as an additional enticement an absorbing 54-minute documentary is included charting the great man's celebrated return to Berlin. --Julian Haylock, International Record Review

'An initial session with [this] performance confirms that among the most striking aspects of Sergiu Celibidache's Bruckner is its tendancy toward extreme breadth... Music, for him, is a form of liberation. The videoed evidence is impressive:... you do indeed gain the impression of someone enjoying a profound sense of inner freedom.' --Rob Cowan, Gramophone Awards 2012 Issue
