Of all Anton Bruckner's symphonies, the Sixth is his most original. Its contrasting moods, and overarching theme moving from darkness to light, bring music that can be haunting one moment and ecstatic the next, culminating in one of the most enigmatic symphonic endings of the 19th century.

As I am writing this, I am listening again to this recording. For those that were seriously disappointed in the sound of Sir Colin's 9th (and with good reason), you can put away your fears. This is a great sounding recording. The LSO is in top form. One must wonder what happened with the 9th since the 6th was also recorded in the Barbican. Here, ensemble is fairly tight, vivid, and well-balanced. There is great effect in having the 1st and 2nd violins on opposite sides of the stage; something that is missing when having the orchestra in a more conventional seating pattern.
There are times when an orchestra's performance can overcome the lack of conductor's insight. This is just one case. I do not know why Sir Colin decided to do Bruckner. He just doesn't seem to have the right mind set for it. The 4 stars given here are not for the interpretation but the orchestra's brilliant performance.
Personally, there are truly no satisfying performances of the 6th. Acceptable versions (until something better comes along) are, of course, Karajan and Jochum (in the case of the 6th, I would probably go with his Dresden recording).
Unfortunately, this recording is not particularly insightful or inspiring, not a suitable first choice for a new listener to Bruckner, and definitely not a replacement for a favorite recording by a seasoned listener.
Many times when attending a fine concert, I think, "That was really quite a performance, I hope it will be rebroadcast on radio, or released on CD." I wonder if the attendees of this concert were thinking something similar. Mmmmmmmmm.........probably not.
