By Bruce TOP 500 REVIEWER on 27 Dec. 2013
I can't really add more to the excellent review from Ralph Moore of the actual music here - nearly 4 hours of the most wonderful music-making from the Bavarian State Orchestra and Kent Nagano, captured in the highest quality possible.

However, I would like to recommend Pure Audio as a medium for this and it is truly wonderful to hear it in surround sound on a good home cinema set up. Not many people have SACD equipment, but there are plenty who have bought Blu Ray surround systems, mostly to use for films. Hearing these recordings with the immersive quality of surround sound, capturing the all round reverberation of a cathedral acoustic, adds immensely to the experience.

If you have a Blu Ray home cinema system and are a Bruckner fan, this disc is a "must have" purchase.

It is true that I have other performances which may be better than these (Karajan's Bruckner 8 for a start). But it is also true that these are good performances of alternative versions in the most magnificent sound. Despite the rather long reverberation time (or slightly distant microphones?) there is magnificent solidity to the brass and bass frequencies in general which exceeds any of my previous recordings of Bruckner whether CD or SACD. The impact begins to approach reality after all these years of disappointing sound and glacial string tone in particular. One can simply enjoy something close to a real orchestral experience here and even if Nagano is not a great Bruckner conductor, he is a good conductor, which counts for a lot. I am glad I took the risk of purchasing this blu ray at a low price - the sound is important and the performances are live, so hopefully perfect but sterile studio recordings in execrable CD sound may at last become a thing of the past..

After listening to a review of, so called High Definition Blu ray audio in CD review on BBC radio 3 I thought I would investigate. HMV had only 2 in stock. So, I bought this from Amazon. Close to 4 hours of music, all of a quality I have never heard before on CD. I have a Samsung basic blu ray player purchased for less than £50 from the local supermarket, but play this via coaxial cable through an arcam rdac (digital to analogue converter) cost about £250. I have been put off listening to orchestral and complex vocal textures on CDs and, for some time now, I have ceased buying them. On this single blu ray disc, however, the sheer quality of the sound and the breathtaking beauty of these symphonies is a revelation to me. One night I listened to all three symphonies in a row. The word "wow" is not an overstatement. And, I have not, as yet, listened to this in surround sound. I have given this 5 stars because I could not find 6.
