Don Cherry at his best. Worldmusic avant la lettre. Avantgarde (before the bunch) jazz in the strict sense of the word. I think Miles would loved this record.

Basically a let down with Don Cherry uncharacteristically involving himself in experimental jazz fusion.
full of gimmicks and distorted vocals aside from Cherry's trumpet sound bordering on artificial.
Charlie Haden , Billy Higgins & Frank Lowe are fellow luminaries who must regret ever getting involved in this unholy mess.
on 'Malkauns' a guy called Moki plays the Tambourra which to all intents and purposes sounds like a wasp being trapped in a bread bin.
if you really want to pick some succulent Cherries then try 'Song of Soil' from 1979 or 'Dona Nostra' from 1993...both are consistently excellent

Having heard his work as a sideman with Ornette Coleman and being impressed it was with his move to a more ethnic sound that Don really floated my boat. The tune Malkauns on this album really does take me to another place. This album also lead me on to Orient, Mu parts 1 and 2, and Organic Music Society the journey still continues. But Brown Rice is for me his standout and therefore highly recommended.

Don Cherry is an acclaimed jazz artist and i consider his "Brown Rice" LP as one of the best in jazz history. Apart from the personnel, which appeared in many other jazz masterpieces, the clarity of sound is exceptional. This CD/LP could be a point of reference for future producers and surely a most enjoyable record for many many years
