This book was no doubt revelatory when first written several decades ago. The extent to which Freemasonry penetrated many public offices is not exaggerated, and the nepotism and back-scratching must have been prevalent.

But since the 1990s Freemasonry has hugely fallen out of favour. The powerful senior figures alluded to in this book (who held sway over the police, the army, the civil service etc) have all long-retired and there has been very little interest from younger people to join Freemasonry. About 100 lodges close each year in the UK and the organization is unlikely to survive another 100 years.

Since this book was written Freemasonry has been all but wiped out in the business world. It has gone from being a powerful network to an organisation in terminal decline. The world this book covers is long-gone, and the future survival of Freemasonry is in doubt. Most lodges are filled with elderly men, and within another twenty years even they will be gone with insufficient numbers to replace them. This book is now a matter of history, and bares little relevance to the current influence of modern Freemasonry, which is a pale, rapidly dwindling shadow of its former self.

I bought this book for information and it gives a picture of the Freemasons in the UK and other countries. It is a little dated and very definitely not an entertaining read but then it was intended as an expose and does give away some secrets. So worth buying if you want to know some of the inside workings of Freemasons.
