4.0 out of 5 starsNice printer - better than inkjet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 October 2018
I did a few calcs before buying it and the price per page is looking very good, especially when paired with replacement toner from some lesser known manufacturers. It comes with toner though, and instructions, CD's, power lead, etc, but I've got it set up wirelessly.

The wireless setup was actually much easier than equivalent printers, as some I've used in the past need you to connect to a PC first, then move to wireless, but you can do it all wirelessly from the off. The only slight downside I have is the software and drivers that come with it are a little limited, so you can perhaps print in normal or fine mode, and I did spot toner saver, but you can't (for example) set multiple photos to print on a single page, or half the page in colour, half in mono, etc. Lots of settings that I've seen in more expensive printers just aren't there, but it is actually a budget printer.

It's worth working out how many pages you'll expect to print before buying printers such as these, and I got the printer and a spare set of toners (extra from different supplier) and I expect this to last me around 6 months - not bad for what will be around 25 pounds a month, even if it gives up the ghost after that.

Print quality is good, but depends a great deal on the paper. However, on budget paper, it's quite acceptable and much better than inkjet, with no banding or noticeable artifacts in the print quality. Definitely worth it, but please have someone there to help you carry it, as it is MUCH bigger and heavier than I expected. (If this review is helpful, please give me a thumbs up, as it's nice to know I'm not just writing these for my finger exercises!)

1.0 out of 5 starsAfter having this machine for a little over a week ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 August 2017
After having this machine for a little over a week it started to squeal so loud every time a sheet of paper came out. After about a month of that god awful noise I got a hold of tech support and worked out a deal with them to have it repaired at a local shop. They had the machine for 6 weeks and I was without a printer that whole time. When I FINALLY got it back it worked properly for 2 days and then the noise was back. I immediately got back with tech support and arranged for a refurbished one to be sent to me and I would then have 5 days to send my old one back. The refurbished one is now constantly "cooling down" and won't print when it is doing this. The air vent is not blocked and it doesn't feel or smell hot. I have had the refurbished one for roughly 2 months now and it is making the same squealing noise that the first one made. I just don't think this machine is meant for the high volume printing that I do every day as our office has several of the same machines without problems.
It goes to "sleep" continually, no matter how you set it, then you have to get up and restart it. I've spent over an hour on the phone with the support trying to get it fixed. It worked ok and lasted 2 days, then back to the way it was.
dont forget, it does NOT run two sided copies, that's a big problem and always having to take way too much time to reload the paper and being ALWAYS having to worry will it print on the proper side of the paper or on top of the one I just printed and destroy everything, especially when you have very little time to spare before an important meeting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Print Quality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 19 November 2018

A bit of a gamble when you buy Amazon Warehouse deals. This one was misdescribed as only a cosmetic mark and a damaged box when it had actually been used to print over 200 sheets and the toners were depleted by 20-30%. The compensation given by Amazon means I'm still out of pocket on the value of the toner but too much hassle to return. Not a happy Prime member at present.

But this review is about the product itself. All the toners had been installed when it arrived (which triggered alarm bells). However, it connected to my WiFi router with no problems. Setting up the drivers on the PC generated an error message which told me to restart the PC and re-run the installation. But I didn't and it was all set up correctly anyway. Connected first time. There are some weird Brother offers to bypass on the way to registration. Instructions are not always accurate so needs a little guesswork. Actually relatively straightforward compared to some nightmare printer installations.

Then to printing. I printed a very detailed full page wildlife photo as an ultimate test. Absolutely stunning print quality given I was using particularly cheap supermarket paper and the Normal rather than Best print setting. If you use compatible toners then the price per sheet can be less than half a pence which is incredible value, a fraction of the price of other printers. If you buy genuine Brother toners a full set will cost you twice the price of the printer. The drums don't have the longest lifetime but long enough - I'll never get near the 15,000 or so prints they last but if you're in a big office and a heavy paper producer then you need to factor that in. A full set of compatibles is around £60 but genuine Brother ones will set you back twice the cost of the printer again.

I've given maximum marks for durability but this is based on what appears to be good solid build quality; no real evidence other than I've had a mono Brother laser for about 18 months and it's as good as new.

Overall I'd recommend this printer highly, but caution against the Amazon Warehouse deals if they are only marginally below the price new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent quality at an affordable price.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 25 October 2016

Ok lets get one thing straight from the off. If you are looking to print photos for display get an inkjet or thermal printer, you will never get display quality photos from a laser/tonner type printer.
That said, I have just replaced a Samsung model with this after 6 years of service and the quality of the prints is excellent. A little muted in the colours and a little bit of banding if you look close. I only really use mine for printing general documents and its really good at it. Its probably 3 times faster than my Samsung was, and text and graphics are very sharp and defined.
I was dreading the whole WiFi setup as other reviews said it could be a nightmare. I'm pretty tech minded but to be honest it was so easy. If you have a WPS type router just press the button on both to connect. I didn't so had to do it the "hard way", but even entering the setting manually wasn't much of a chore and had everything up and running in about 10min. Connecting to my phone and iPad was instant and had no issues. Since getting the printer my router packed up so had to get another one. Wondered if this would cause any problems with the printer but nothing. This time I used the WPS function and it was connected and working in less than 5min.
Time will tell if there are any other issues seen on other reviews. If you want a decent affordable printer for general printing needs this is great. If you want photos, get something else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caution: No UK plug and Google Cloud Print is currently broken
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 28 August 2013

Seems a good printer but if you are buying from the UK please note you will need to buy a UK plug as there is only a 2-pin euro-style plug in the box. An old 3-pin "kettle" lead as you would use for a PC will suffice so you may have one kicking around. Also no USB cable, although that is less of an issue if you are connecting this printer to your home network.

Contrary to horror stories about setting this up on wireless and printing from Mac computers setup was simple for me. Brother have improved the wireless setup process - it can all be done from the LCD panel and you just need to know your SSID and network password. Mac printing was also simple - open Print/Scan preferences, add a printer and it will show up as an Air Print printer in the list. No drivers to install and no manufacturer bloatware either - a big plus having spent hours configuring previous Epson & Kodak printers on Mac

Currently Google Cloud Print is broken which may be an issue if you are wanting to print from Android or a Chromebook. Google changed "something" and Brother are now busy updating their printer firmware to take account of this. I could add the printer to a certain extent but it would only show as being offline when trying to print. If this is important to you then I can't recommend this printer at the moment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wireless network and USB only, but otherwise a first-class machine
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 16 April 2015
Verified Purchase
An excellent printer, which even produces decent photo-prints.

Unlike the experience of some others, mine did come with a UK power cable, and was easy to set up physically. Software installation is fairly tedious, but if you follow the (flow-chart style) instructions to the letter, it goes well.

I was a little disappointed that the Product Description was inaccurate: it is not "Wired and wireless network ready." However, it's quite a bit cheaper than the model that does have an RJ45 socket, and setting the wireless network parameters via a USB cable was not difficult (though I did end up with two instances of the printer on the machine I set it up on). I reserved an IP address on my Netgear router, and then used that address for a custom installation on the user computers.

The instructions warn that the USB cable isn't supplied, but it's only needed during set-up, so you should be able to borrow one from another device; it's a standard A-B cable.

The iPad and Android Apps downloaded quickly and work well. They don't provide the ability to print from within all Apps; what you do is run the Brother App, which gives access to data in areas like the photo gallery, email and the web. The GoodReader App on IOS does link to this printer, which is a real bonus. I haven't yet found how to do if with Documents by Readdle (an excellent and free file-manager)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous connectivity, fast accurate printing

Wow! This arrived today so I can't comment on the durability of it (although it is definitely chunky and feels well built), but by the end of the first half hour we had printed pictures from:
- Windows 7 machine
- Three Android devices (Sony phone running Ice Cream Sandwich, Samsung tablet running the same, and old Samsung phone running Gingerbread)
- Apple Ipad.
We have since set it up to run across the USB cable with our old XP desktop and again it's quick and simple and installed with the CD supplied.

So impressed, for the first time in ages we are all able to use the same printer without having to exchange any files across te network. The colour is good, the installation is simple (although the entering of the network password is a joke, as others have already mentioned), and when I set it to the 'fine' setting for a photograph it came out pretty impressive.

Word of note - from Ipad and Android devices, using the Brother app, we only seem to be able to print a single image to A4 - great for the kids but with no resizing options it is not the most useful thing in the world. However, there may be other apps availabe that deal with this (for the techies out there, the SDK is available so maybe someone can build us one!). On the document side though I have just printed a nine-page document from Android (phone) and it came out absolutely fine, the app gives the option to print mono only, fine/ normal quality, and also allows 2 in 1 and 4 in 1 printing (handy as it doesn't do duplex). Quite suprised to say 4 pages on 1 is quite easy to read - this will save us a stack of paper.

All in all I love this machine. I know it's early days but so far it couldn't have delivered better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value for money!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 16 April 2017

Having owned ink printers for years, I decided to move to a laser this time round. I don't print often and my last inkjet kept drying up, whereas lasted printers don't have that problem.

It's a chunky beast that's for sure, but don't so big it doesn't fit on my desk. Setup was easy, it comes with a CDs but my laptop (like most modern ones) doesn't have a CD player so I downloaded the drivers from the Brother website. The great thing is that you can setup the wifi connection from the install app, but you still need a cable connected to do this.

Quality is good, definitely not photo quality like an inkjet but I now use online services for that. Speed is fine for my occasional use. I like the deep sleep mode so it's always ready to print, wifi printing works a treat. I also downloaded the brother app for my iphone so can print things directly from there.

I haven't used it long enough to know how long the packaged timers last but I have read it can be quite a while.

Overall a good home laser printer which represents good value for moneh

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value laser printer

Excellent price and super fast delivery from Printerland, delivered in under 24 hours by DPD. This replaces an A4 colour Konica Minolta laser I've had for several years, that has now become troublesome. The Brother seems well designed and was easy to set up. I use a Mac and the printer drivers on the supplied CD are not very up-to-date, but it was easy to find the current ones on Brother.co.uk, the drivers auto match to the OS version you are using, once you have selected your printer model HL-3140CW. Wifi was easy to set up. I found using a USB cable to my main computer caused a bit of confusion while setting up with the printer drivers, as there are two versions of the drivers, one for USB and one for wireless (Airplay), the USB driver seemed to be selected as the default, so had to delete it and add the airplay version instead. Other Macs on the network installed the correct Airplay driver version first time. I had my previous laser printer for ten years, so I hope this proves as long-lasting, although it cost a quarter of the price of the Konica Minolta, it seems very well engineered.

My previous laser printer was on a wired network, but as all the Macs at home are linked back to my wireless hub by ethernet and the hub sits right next to the printer, connectivity is just as good. Plus the bonus that I can print directly from my iPhone and iPad.

item arrived promptly with good packaging. On opening the box was confronted by a pile of booklets. In Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Danish, all very well if you speak these languages. Unfortunately I only speak English. There was a power cable with a two pin European plug. Helpfully there was also another cable with a UK plug on one end and a standard two pin connection on the other end. Brill I thought, use that to power up. Unhelpfully there is no two pin socket on the machine!! This required a trip to B&Q for a European to UK power adaptor. (looks like a shaver socket). I then had to go to the Brother website to download the information to get going. From there on it was pretty straightforward. Connection to my network was by WPS with no probs. Installed the drivers from the CD on my Win7 laptop and wife's MacBook. Printing is quick with very good quality in both mono and colour. I look forward to saving a lot of money by relegating my Canon inkjet to photos. Would be happy to give 5 stars but for the (very silly) initial problems

Very good till we came to change the cartridges after almost 4 years of home use. Absolute nightmare! Finally managed to change all cartridges and printer is once again working well. So in conclusion I would recommend it but be prepared for difficulties when it's time to change the cartridges.
