Product description
Review
The main strength of this book is Howard's determination to stick to provable facts. He gives a very convincing explanation. A very valuable piece of work. A splendid overview of the current state of knowledge on the military equipment of these early civilisations. --hist of war

This is the best book on the subject of bronze age military equipment that one could imagine. It includes assessments of how equipment might have been used complete with results of trials of replica items, plus a section on the size and shape of shields which comes up with some suprising conclusions. If you have any interest in the subject you will find this book fascinating.

Although the picture is of another Dan Howard book, the book actually posted is the one described, Bronze Age Military Equipment, which is a great book.

Well argued coverage of Middle East and Mediterranean Bronze Age weapons and armour.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 August 2020
I have owned this book for three years and have only just read it. It was well written and logically laid out with credit given to those who have constructed replica weapons and armour and then tested them. These are well covered in the colour plates in the book. There are also a number of black and white illustrations though for me the book would have benefitted with more of these, although I have other books with photographs or illustrations which covered the areas I thought really would have been enriched by illustration. The book ends with an overview of what different cultures would be armed and armoured with. There is a lengthy section on the Trojan war and considerable use of sections of Homer. Although there is a substantial time discrepancy between events and writing the points are well argued and are supported by archaeological evidence which is alas not illustrated for the points being discussed. There was little I found controversial, though I did not agree with the authors assertion that Minoan and Mycenaeans did not use long spears for chariot warfare when this is supported both by Homer and archaeological illustrations ; he is of the opinion that they used bows as a primary weapon for chariot warriors when this is NOT supported by evidence. I found it strange that he used Homer to support his views on armour and shields but discards Homer on weapons. Other than that I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the era.
