Review

'Foulds' linguistic pearls are dispensed liberally and casually. Poetry cannot beautify a situation such as this yet Foulds has created something beautiful' -- Scotland on Sunday

`The dramatic force of the broken word comes from its skilful juxtapositions: knowledge and ignorance, innocence and guilt...a moving and pitiless depiction of the world as it is' -- The Guardian

`an impressive debut... written in gripping cinematic vignettes' -- Financial Times Magazine

"In this remarkable literary tour de force, place and period are conjured up with dazzling versatility and the neglected art of verse fiction is wonderfully revitalised" -- Sunday Times

'...It is rare to find such capacious lyricism, combining irony and terror, political scope and domestic detail'
-- Daily Telegraph, Nick Laird

'dazzling... an exhilarating tour de force. Place and period are conjured up as confidently as if he had been there... violence and terror.. elegance of accuracy... emotional power... imaginative finesse... concise and precise, attentive and inventive - a superlative achievement'
-- The Sunday Times

'remarkable literary tour de force ... the neglected art of verse fiction is wonderfully revitalised'
-- Sunday Times

`A tour de force of pared-down narrative, this is a work that merges emotional force and imaginative finesse'
-- Sunday Times

`Foulds has genuine talent'
-- The Independent

`a dark vivid, extraordinarily accomplished narrative poem.... the arrival of a significant literary talent'
-- Sunday Times

Format: Paperback
I read The Quickening Maze and was enthralled by the characters and the beauty of Foulds' prose, so when I discovered he had also written a novel in narrative poem form I bought it straight away, and read it in one sitting. The narrative itself - an 18 year old boy's transition to manhood during the Mau Mau rebellion in 1950s Kenya - is chilling. The poetry is startling in its sharpness and the images which often surprise, always draw you in.I'll be pre-ordering Adam Foulds' next book.

Format: Paperback
This short but startlingly effective verse narrative is set in the 1950s in the British expatriate community in Kenya at the time of the Mau Mau uprising. Tom has just finishing his schooling in England and before starting university education, he is “blooded” in the brutal response to the insurrection by the self-policing white community, followed by a short stint serving with the military. The cruel violence he witnesses and participates in against the native population damages Tom, and we see the psychological effect it has on him after he starts his university course. The writing is deft and elegant, and the observation and description piercingly meticulous.

Speedy delivery but not great quality in terms of the product itself. Glued binding that is visible and black spotting on pages. However, for quick delivery and a cheap price can't complain.
