"A chillingly real psychological drama that had me in a total reading frenzy. I absolutely loved it." (Lisa Jewell)
"Darkly compelling .... a pacy story that kept me turning the pages right until the final, shocking twist. " (Paula Daly)
"A brilliant and skilfully plotted depiction of the unexpected breakdown of a friendship between two couples, with one of the most chilling twists I've read in a long time. I couldn't put it down." (Louise Millar, author of THE PLAYDATE)
"A wonderfully compelling and exciting book, a storyline that had sparks flying from every page, terrific writing and a hugely exhilerating and thrilling read. I loved it!" (Louise Douglas)
"An inexorable drama in which the characters' prejudices and loyalties leave them unable to separate face value from reality. THE BROKEN explores manipulation, deceit, betrayal and abuse, and how loss can both shape and destroy us." (Elizabeth Forbes, author of NEAREST THING TO CRAZY)
"I raced to finish this story of a couple caught in the fall-out of their best friends' split. Beautifully written and peppered with moments of stunning observation, it's a superb read." (Amanda Jennings)
"Fabulous. I was drawn in from the very first page. Tamar is very skilled at creating characters that seem so real, almost as if we're their best friends too, yet beneath their exteriors, you just know there's so much more simmering away. The tension grew with every page turn, until it was almost unbearable, yet I couldn't stop reading! I literally gasped out loud, so shocked by the very unexpected ending. This brilliant book will be on my mind for a long time." (Samantha Hayes, author of UNTIL YOU'RE MINE)
"Compulsive reading ... the tension racks up and the book switches from domestic drama into full-blown, chilling thriller" (Essentials, Book of the Month)
"Everyone's talking about this ... A gripping cocktail of betrayal and revenge" (Prima Magazine)
"Dramatic, sad and tense, it's essential you get your hands on this thriller. (Five stars)" (Closer)
When close friends split, be careful whose side you're on - a stunning psychological thriller for fans of DEAR DAUGHTER and BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP.See all Product description

All sorts of questions and feelings are raised in this chilling story; envy, jealously, arrogance, revenge, betrayal and loyalty. Sinister, personal and criminal acts and accusations are thrown back and forth. It gripped me totally. Can friends remain neutral in such a situation? How do you tell who is lying? How far do you let another’s relationship affect your own? How can you extricate yourself from the breakdown of a couple without losing the friendship of both? Where are the lines between loyalty, friendship and support - and betrayal?
Super-flowing reading, gripping story - that old cliche "I couldn't put it down" all apply. It has a haunting ending - you want to revisit to get an update - will there be a sequel? - Please? I will be definitely be looking for other titles from this author. Highly recommended.
Other than that it was very good. Dan announces to his friend Josh that he's leaving his wife Sasha for (literally) a younger model, Sienna. Dan relies on Josh for emotional support while Sasha turns to Josh's wife Hannah. Sasha very quickly goes to pieces and her demands on Hannah are narcissistic and unacceptable. I have been in a similar situation vis a vis a friend's marriage which broke down and I have to say this part of the novel was very well written: from the declarations of Dan who is going to remain friends with his ex wife and make sure she is well provided for (aye right!) to the pressure put on Hannah for her time and attention leading to her neglecting her own family as well as her work. All of this was realistic though at times a bit over the top. There's an irritating narrative thread from a small child which relates to the ending and I was wary of this from the start. Rightly as it turned out.
Thinking about it, this could have been an excellent novel, not a psychological thriller, about the break up of a marriage and how it can destroy even those not directly involved. In the end I felt let down and irritated.
This would be a good enough story on its own but there is a diary of someone’s childhood showing emotional issues. We don’t know who this is and get a couple of pages every so often. I must say I kind of ignored it until it formed part of the twist at the end. I don’ know that it made much difference to the book. I ended reading thinking, ‘ Is that it? What was that all about?’
