'A rip-roaring page-turner with considerable depth. A vivid, authentic flavour of those turbulent times, laced as it is with carefully worked-in historical detail that's informative without being intrusive' --Historical Novels Review --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author

Jack Ludlow is the pen name of writer David Donachie, who was born in Edinburgh in 1944. He has had a variety of jobs, including selling everything from business machines to soap. He has always had an abiding interest in the naval history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which he drew upon for the many novels he has set in that period. This is Ludlow's 2nd in a series following Cal Jardine as he works his was into the conflicts prior to World War Two. Jardine, an arms smuggler who helped the Ethiopians in the first book and here helps the Spanish Republicans. Battling Nazis, communists and other no-goodniks, the ubiquitous Jardine is sure to escape every scrape.

Ludlow, who worked well in the past in dealing with the Romans, needs to do a bit more homework in the 20th century. A character here in 1936 discusses Stalin's murder of Trotsky. A little problem considering the fact that Trotsky was murdered in 1940!

It looks like Jardine in heading to the Sudentenland next. I'm sure he will smuggle some guns, rescue some attractive females and try to save the world. What a shocker.

This is the second book in this series for Jack Ludlow. I loved the idea of this Roads to War, but this man writes in a way that is difficult to read. His sentences "run on" and by the time you reach the end you sometimes forget what the beginning was about. His ideas a great however, and if you can stand to be jerked around mentally, by his style of writing, you will enjoy the book. This one is about Spain in about 1939. The fascists and communists are fighting each other in a Spanish venue. The story line is quite different and keeps one reading. You want to see what happens to the characters, we all know what happened in Spain during their Civil War.
Franco and the fascists won. If you can put up with the long sentences, you will like the book.
