I bought this book a couple of days ago after reading a review on it, and finished it within 36 hours. Written in a simple, straighforward and page-turning way, the author tells the story of her family background in Rotherham and her journey through voluntary work in a youth club to the Risky Business project which worked with children being groomed and abused in the town over many years. Most people have heard about the Rotherham abuse scandal and cover up, which hit the national press after investigation by Times reporter Andrew Norfolk. I had not read more than the summaries of the Jay Report and Casey reports after they were summarised in the media, knew little about the Risky Business project other than the name, and wanted to read this book to get a clearer picture of its relationship to the "official" social services, council and police in Rotherham. Jayne Senior covers a period of over 20 years of her involvement in youth work, and explains how this work with the abused girls differed from the approach of the social services. It details the difficulties of gaining the confidence of the abused girls, and how Risky Business went about it. Unfortunately, their successful approach and intelligence gathering on the abusers was viewed with continued hostility from social services, who raided her files, and finally closed down Risky Business. They were seen as a bunch of amateurs who did not have professional training by both social services and the police in Rotherham, and the attitude to the abused children was shocking. It was interesting to learn that the police in nearby Sheffield were more willing to help, though they could not act in Rotherham.Read more ›

Not a report but the moving account of the whole scandal and how it developed, from start to finish. I salute you Jayne for all you have done, such incredible strength, while you yourself were being intimidated. Very well written.

Too many words are written which are at times hard if not impossible to comprehend. We are truly fortunate to have people with the courage to risk being unpopular for the greater good. I hope these words and others of the same vein help to remove these vile, selfish and inhumane monsters from our society. Thank God or whomever for Jayne Senior. A true hero along with the survivors. The world deserves better for our young .

Plainly written, with humanity. Harrowing but a read that clarifies how politics with a small P lets down some of our most vulnerable children.

When I was a teacher in Rochdale in the 1980, I was given a complete dressing down by the headteacher of the school in which I was working, after I passed on information to the welfare officer about a pupil who was reported have been abused. I now wonder what the Head and his team may have been trying to hide after reading this shocking book by Jayne Senior. Those who were working tirelessly to prevent and stop abuse in Rotherham were deliberately thwarted, ignored, and their evidence dismissed. Jayne Senior should be made a Dame : how brave and dogged she was to keep on trying to make a difference in the face of such hostility and brutality in Rotherham. Reading this book made me feel so naïve : I've always thought that in general those with power in important jobs are there to keep society safe. This book exposes corruption in the police, social services and the councils in Rotherham. I hope Jayne's work will bring positive changes, not just to Rotherham, but in other places where abuse can be prevented and perpetrators brought to justice.

You couldn't make it up. A very well written account of the actual events. I don't know how Jayne the girls or the families survived this. This book should be compulsory reading not only for police officers social workers and youth workers but also for young people. I believe this book to be a message to us all.
