Product Description

Product Description

As he withdrew from the public eye in his later years, Britten re-dedicated himself to composition with an intensity that defied his failing health. Featuring contributions from a host of friends and collaborators, John Bridcut s documentary examines the autobiographical impulses behind masterpieces including Death in Venice and the Third String Quartet, tells the inside story of Britten s battle with heart disease and reveals his late period as one of the twentieth century s bravest artistic achievements.

This DVD looks at the final 10 years of Britten s Life and what caused his death.

The film was superbly done in all its aspects of the last years of Britten, and the people around him still alive added a personal dimension to the story ,especially RitaThomson and Sue Phiipps.
Our one big disappointment was that there were no subtitles for the hard of hearing as my husband is in need of these,so it rather clouded our enjoyment. Most DVDs one buys these days automatically provide this facility and it was sorely missed.

The greatest composer of the Twentieth Century in the view of many. Shostakovich and Stravinsky must be in the line up as well, but for me BB is the head honcho.

John Bridcut must be the best classical music documentarian working today. This film is another excellent addition to his oeuvre. The problem with doing a documentary on a composer like Britten is that so many have already been made. Yet Bridcut finds new ground to till. This film deals with Britten's race with death as he battles to finish his final masterpieces before his health fails him. The production values are wonderful...filled with great interviews and musical performances. It's a moving film. A must for any Britten fan.
