Having collected a number of reference books on Napoleonic uniforms and equipment over recent decades, including Mr Franklin's volume on British Napoleonic artillery, I wondered whether this new volume on British Napoleonic uniforms would be of significant value in my reference collection. Would it, for example, reach the high standards set for French Napoleonic uniforms in the Histoire et Collections series, in terms of the scope of its coverage of uniform variations. I was amazed at the quality and comprehensiveness of the work. Here is the dream volume for modellers of British Army subjects of the Napoleonic period. Every regiment of the permanent army is covered, as are a range of militia units. Details of uniforms for officers, NCOs, soldiers and musicians are included, together with weapons, equipment, saddelery, and so forth. Beautifully illustrated and printed, this is a wonderful addition to the collection, and is every bit as good as Mr Franklin's previous two volumes. One can only hope that he will now turn his attention to other uniforms of the British Napoleonic period - those of the Marines, the Royal Navy, and the emigre troops - to complete the series. We might then hope for a similar treatment of the British forces during the American revolutionary war and earlier. I hope to see many more excellent volumes produced by Mr Franklin and Spellmount.

I find that when you pre-order books up to 6-8 months in advance of the publication date, the product, when it arrives, can be something of an anti-climax. Not so with this title. In short, the wait was worth it. This is a book that anyone with an interest in Napoleonic uniforms has been waiting for; it is superb. Excellent information, excellent illustrations. I am lucky enough to already own quite an extensive Napoleonic uniform library and I've cross-referenced information and uniform details found in Franklin's book with other titles and found the other titles wanting. C Franklin has done a fantastic job in pulling all of his research together and, it would appear, that he is quoting from primary sources for the key information. I must confess to not owning any other title by this author but, based on the quality of this book, I am purchasing 'British Napoleonic Field Artillery' and hoping that this has been produced to the same standard.

I'm not normally the one to write praise for a book but this is one stunning, the detail on the uniform and accoutrements is some of the best I've seen, even to scale on belts, straps, cartridge pouchs and many more items. Being a former modeler and returning to the hobby I have been searching for this kind of information and this book ticks all the boxes. The pictures and drawings are superb, buy this book you will not regret it.

I bought this as a reference for painting napoleonic miniatures and it doesn't disappoint. If you want a regimental history book then this isn't for you but it doesn't claim to be one. Its not a book I'll use every day but I'm glad I own it.

The drawings are clear indications of the colours of each regiment and variations in rank with changes through the period. I'd dismiss the comment about day-glo green as nonsense. The odd photo of surviving uniforms would have been nice but this isn't an Osprey book.

Unspeakably awful. Largely unreferenced. The majority of the content is fictional, essentially dreamt up out of Mr Franklin's vivid imagination. There are primary sources for less than 10% of the uniforms illustrated in here. Let me repeat that: There are primary sources for LESS THAN 10% OF THE UNIFORMS ILLUSTRATED. I can't begin to understand the popularity of this complete waste of ink and paper. It is, in essence, a work of fiction and not to be relied upon in any way, shape or form.

Best used for curling papers. And that's being generous.

This is a beautiful book if you like Military Uniforms and history. It is packed with illustrations and covers every regiment of the British Army. After reading this you will know what any regiment looked like in the Napoleonic wars; thier belts, buckles, shakoes, facings, etc. Sadly no history of each regiment, just uniforms! Each regiment has a page of illustrations to its self. Highly recomended for people interested in this period and probably essential to model makers.

I am using this book for background research for my second novel. I can't think how it could be bettered. It illustrates all the uniforms, hats, facings, buttons, regimental badges, swords etc in an orderly fashion. There's a very clear index and glossary so you can look up any regiment and find illustrations (back and front views) over the period of the Napoleonic wars.
It's much better than the often quoted 'Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars' as that doesn't give half the detail you find in Franklin's book (although it gives details of the uniforms worn by some of the other countries involved in the wars).
