Format: Paperback
This is an excellent introductory guide to the period 1485 - 1939, full of illustrations in which the various features of buildings are clearly labelled. This will help the beginner to acquire an understanding of the basics and a good vocabulary of terms in architecture and design. However, the title is misleading in that the book is purely about houses -and then mainly stately homes and town/city houses. Those hoping to learn about churches and cathedrals, rural, industrial or civic buildings will be disappointed

I have always found old buildings fascinating and wanted to know how to date them and their extensions. British Architectural Styles proved an easy reference guide, helping me to date the wide variety of building we see around us. It covers the immense range of architectural styles from 1500 to 1950, complete with a glossary of architectural terms and a historical time chart. Each chapter covers a distinct period with a background to the social and economic history and details of the styles of architecture in fashion at the time. The result is an invaluable companion when visiting villages or stately homes, or for those who are renovating, tracing the history of their own home.

Bought this book to help us house hunting in West London and it was extremely useful. We used it to quickly and easily identify the period of the houses we were viewing and now are using it as a springboard to think about how to decorate (there is basic info on doors, fireplaces etc).

Good illustrations and it's all written in good, clear English.

It's a bargain.

Very brief summary of architectural styles with nice drawings - OK for an absolute beginner, but it's all a bit general and the binding is poor - the book is starting to fall apart after short usage. "Further reading" only includes books by the same author!

Good, short, to the point handbook on the most common aspects of british architectural styles over the ages. Doesn't cover in much detail but good to be used as a basic reference guide to dating buildings.

I work as a self-employed carpenter and am always looking for ways to expand knowledge of my trade - this book is well written and although is sadly lacking in colour images, there are plenty of detailed black and white drawings throughout which help to illustrate examples of period property and features - recommended!

This small book covers building styles from 1485 to 1939 in easy to read chapters.
Each chapter covers all the main aspects of building design providing many detailed drawings and straight to the point text.

If, like me, you wanted to know more about the buildings that surround us, but didn't want to wade through a large book laden with unnecessary waffle, then this is the book for you.
Clear and concise.

Amazing little book on Architecture. Lots of facts and good sketches and NOT too wordy either,
Have had fun looking around at local buildings and dating them,
Time Chart and glossary at the end of the book are so simple to use and fitted my needs about understanding Periods, Dates. Styles of Archictecture etc absolutely perfectly.Highly recommend this book. A treat at the price and for the info contained.Buy it !!!!
