I bought two of these, and have to say they're a huge improvement over the old Kidfix (I have two of those as well). While there were two cost centres (children!) in the family there wasn't a problem. When cost centre 3 arrived (4 years ago) however, it raised an immediate challenge as to how to fit 3 car seats in the back of our main cars (Freelander and Jaguar XJR). With the old Kidfix seats in the wife's Freelander and a group 1 seat in the middle (with built in harness) it was difficult, but possible, to fasten the seatbelts on the (old model) outer Kidfix seats. What that means is that I can't fasten them as my hands are slightly too large to fit down the tiny gap between seats as the padded armrests are in the way, whereas my wife could just about do it. When cost centre 3 got bigger and we tried a group 2/3 middle seat it became impossible as there's no harness - the only way to fasten the seatbelt for the middle seat is to remove an outer seat every time - incredibly annoying.
Meanwhile every time I needed to take the children in my car, I would swap over all the seats which was a major hassle plus with the rigid ISOFIX points it was impossible to get all 3 seats in the back, so I didn't use the ISOFIX and just used the seats belted. So 21 months ago I bought two of the new Kidfix SL seats for the Jag plus a Britax Eclipse seat for the middle, and this works great for the following reasons - the Kidfix SL has soft ISOFIX points, made of strong seatbelt fabric, which crucially allows a small amount of leeway in where the seats are located - just enough leeway to fit in a middle seat. Second, the new model doesn't have the obtrusive armrests, instead having those red-lined 'scoops' you see in the picture.

In my opinion the soft ISOFIX applied on these seats are very poor compared to the metal arm type ISOFIX, even with the strap pulled as tight as possible the Britax was very loose and not any safer than a 3 point seatbelt secured seat. Will be returning and getting a traditional style ISOFIX mount seat instead.

Having had the opportunity to get hands on with the Britax Kidfix SL at a recent event, it was great to be able to compare side by side - albeit without a child to lift in & out OR within the confines of a car. This did however let me focus on the real differences in size, usability, fabric, installation methods & the like.

Summary: The Kidfix SL is the mid spec seat available in the Kid SL range. For (older) children between 15-36kg / 4 - 12yrs
With "soft latch" ISOFIX or seatbelt fixing, it's a forward only facing seat using the cars seatbelt system to secure the child & with a variable angle for sleep / sitting during journeys. Compared to the other two seats in the Kidfix SL range, the SL is the one without the adjustable & repositionable side impact protection (movable depending on the side of the car it is installed in) compared to the SICT variant (available as an extra) & the KID II that again has the SICT feature as an optional extra but can't be fitted using ISOFIX at all.

For those wondering the main differences between the Kidfix SL & the (also reviewed) Kidfix XP is the SL has "Soft Latch" ISOFIX fixing but doesn't have the XP energy adsorption pad, neither does it have the SICT module included in the purchase price. Depending on the pricing at the time, it can be possible to buy the SICT module & fit it to the Kidfix SL and to make the whole purchase price cheaper than buying the Kidfix SL SICT outright ! Odd, but there you go !

Soft latch ISOFIX allows those with an awkwardly positioned ISOFIX system in their seats (such as the Nissan Qashqai) we had to locate & secure the ISOFIX seat fixings much, much easier than otherwise would be possible with a rigid fixing bar.

compared to the Britax KIDFIX isofix seat that we bought in 2012 for our old son this seat is a poor comparison. For some reason the isofix points on the seat are not attached to the rigid frame of the seat, but some sort of string. Once the seat is in the car it can be wiggled a bit. The seat material is not as nice as the 2012 model either. The arm rests are now bare plastic rather than being padded & covered in material. I wish Britax had kept the original seat!! For any BMW 3 series touring owners out there, it fits OK as well.

I strongly advise against buying this. The nylon straps that attach into the Isofix fittings are no comparison to the metal ones on the previous model. The seat wobbles everywhere. I had to return it as it was unsafe, even with the nylon strap tightened as much as possible. I love the Britax seats, but this one is not nearly as good as their other Isofix ones with the solid Isofix fittings.

Three years ago I bought the previous model of the Britax Kidfix for my older daughter and have been extremely happy with it. When I was looking to purchase another one for my 4 year old, I ordered this new model. But it is so different. Instead of the solid Isofix points, it has "soft latch" which is two fabric tapes with the Isofix points at the end. The result was that the seat flopped all over the place and I could see no point in paying the extra for the Isofix. A trained fitter tried to tighten it but then the back did not sit properly. It also felt much lighter, more flimsy and the arms are not cushioned. I have no idea why Britax have changed such a great product. I returned the car seat and fortunately have been able to source one of the old models which I am very happy with.
