Praise for the previous edition:"This delightful and profusely illustrated guidebook tells you anything you might reasonably wish to know about dragonflies and damselflies."--Ron Toft, TheTravelEditor.com

Praise for the previous edition:"The colour plates of all species, showing males, females, immatures, and colour forms are excellent, quite lovely in fact, and the detailed easy to use identification charts summarise the key features of adults and larvae. . . . Using this delightful and informative book the beginner or expert can identify any species they encounter." --Trevor Beer, Western Morning News

It seems rare that everybody agrees on one thing and with reference works like this it's usually rarer - but this is the exception, as you can see from browsing the reviews here. I got into Dragonflies through photographing wildlife, then sharing these on internet groups and it was through one of these groups (that specialises in Dragonflies), that I was recommended this book.

I have to say that this is one of the best books of its type that I have read or used - the text is very interesting and if you are looking for places to photograph, it takes you through all the things you need to know in a logical way. Looking at habitats, biology etc. - that is , when/where to find your subjects and where they are likely to be.

The book is interesting to read at home for background and when looking at photographs you have taken - in many cases I have changed my mind about what I was looking at, on the basis of reading the indentification guides. It is also designed to take with you - as it is reasonably small and has a plastic cover to protect it.

In spite of its compact nature though, this is comprehensive in its coverage of all 56 British species and every page is packed with useful facts. There are excellent colour photographs and diagrams, on virtually every page - typically the maps and diagrams on the left and several full-colour photos on the right. All the photos are pin-sharp and clear in showing you the full spectrum of all British Dragonflies and Damselflies - Male and Female, with Juveniles and Larvae.

I can't recommend this book highly enough - the only choice if you are interested in photographing, identifying or studying these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat.

This is, in my view, the best field guide to British dragonflies we have had to date. Some guides have all the information, but something about them means you cannot somehow process it (or maybe it's just me). With this book you cannot help but be drawn in. The presentation is excellent, the photos mostly so, with generally very good and useful text that you want to read. Not perfect - there are a few minor mistakes if I nitpick - but this is the one to have.

I am a keen amateur photographer and naturalist. I am particularly interested in insects (Entomology). This book has fabulous photos and provides an excellent guide to identification of British Dragonflies. It is very well laid out and easy to navigate. Its packed with information and if you are interested in Dragonflies and Damselflies and their biology then this is a must to have in your possession.
It has a plastic protective cover which is great as you are more than likely to take it with you on your dragonfly hunting expeditions. It would fit in a large pocket but its more likely to be in your ruck sack.
The book is very comprehensive and explains the reproduction cycle , ecology and where to find Dragonflys in the UK.
Very impressed with this book and I have a few Dragonfly and insect identification books.

I bought this book because I found that the images I was taking of dragonflies and damselflies revealed a bewildering array of different species. I bought the book to help identify them all and I have to say that it has been a first class way of doing that. The images are clear and the content reveals just how many different species there are. Reading through the book has been quite an eye opener and it was worth every penny that it cost. The book is well made and should last for many years. It does of course give you a wealth of detail about the individual species, locations, feeding, mating, body parts etc. In short if you want to know about dragonflies and damselflies then buy this book and all will be revealed. I would recommend it to anyone who has even a passing interest in this subject.
