You can't avoid it, because it's everywhere. In the looks my kids get in certain spaces, the manner in which some people speak to them, the stuff that goes over their heads. Stuff that makes them cry even when they don't know why. How do you bring up your kids to be kind and happy when there is so much out there trying to break them down?

Bringing Up Race is an important book, for all families whatever their race or ethnicity. Racism cuts across all sectors of society - even the Queen will have to grapple with these issues, as great grandmother to a child of mixed ethnicity. It's for everyone who wants to instil a sense of open-minded inclusivity in their kids, and those who want to discuss difference instead of shying away from tough questions. Uju draws on often shocking personal stories of prejudice along with opinions of experts, influencers and fellow parents to give prescriptive advice making this an invaluable guide.

Bringing Up Race explores:
- When children start noticing ethnic differences (hint: much earlier than you think)
- What to do if your child says something racist (try not to freak out)
- How to have open, honest, age-appropriate conversations about race
- How children and parents can handle racial bullying
- How to recognise and challenge everyday racism, aka microaggressions

A call to arms for ALL parents,
Bringing Up Race starts the conversation which will mean the next generation have zero tolerance to racial prejudice, and grow up understanding what kindness and happiness truly mean.

'Uju Asika has written a necessary book for our times. She throws up huge questions (and responds to them intelligently and with heart). This isn't just a book for talking to children - whatever race or colour they are - about racism and all the other intersecting isms that divide us, it is a book for everyone dedicated to creating a better, kinder world. This crucial book should be required reading!'
- Chika Unigwe, author of On Black Sisters' Street, winner of the Nigeria Prize for Literature in 2012, the Bonderman professor for Creative Writing at Brown University and judge of the Man Booker International Prize in 2017.

'This book could not be more timely. With so many scrabbling around for resources to help navigate our racialized times, Asika draws upon her own experience as a Black Nigerian mother of two boys to offer parents, teachers, carers, educators these stories for survival. As Asika notes, race can no longer be ignored - her own journey is instructive for all - from running the popular 'Babes About Town' (blogging on the immersive cultural education available for her kids in London and beyond) to now deliberately and necessarily making the explicit connections to raising happy Black boys in a prejudiced world. Written with engaging wit, candour, and verve, and containing heart-breaking and heart-warming anecdotes, Bringing Up Race is a needed call to action for all concerned with a future free from racial prejudice.'
- Sai Murray, writer/poet/graphic artist, creative director at Liquorice Fish and trustee of The Racial Justice Network

Vital and Engaging Read
Uju Asika writes effortlessly and movingly, in her must-read debut book, Bringing Up Race. A mix of the anecdotal with Uju's personal experience of racism and others too (including my own), along with actionable advice on how to navigate and apply discussing race with your children (from birth and beyond), makes this an unmissable book. Every school should have it in their library and every parent should read and apply Uju's wisdom. The world would be a better place if they did. Thank you Uju x

As a (self-professed) white liberal, I believed I was bringing up my white kids to be anti-racist... but this book made me realise there is so much more I could actively be doing. It is beautifully written and well-structured with a balance of moving human stories, fascinating psychological & sociological research and practical talking points. I believe it should be required reading for all parents, and schools. It has opened my eyes to the myriad ways that I “don’t see” racism and don’t acknowledge white privilege. It has profoundly changed the way in which I see the world, and sparked meaningful discussions with my children, who I know will be more aware as a result. It has taught me that risking saying something imperfect is infinitely preferable to pretending nothing is wrong. I’ve told all my friends to read it.

Such an important book, it should be on all our must read lists. Uju Asika has written a practical, accessible and vital book. The practical pieces include the importance of diversity from a young age, the danger and impact of ignorance and the responsibility on us all to do better. It is a prejudiced world. This book shines a light on just how prejudiced. But the author also gives advice on how to ensure the next generation are more aware, kinder and less likely to carry on the prejudice.

It’s 2020, we simply must do better! This book is a great place to start.

Even though the subject is serious, this book is an easy read that will make you laugh, cry, scream, and inspire throughout the pages. Even as a brown person myself, I was shocked at some of the stories of racism in this book. This book is vital in educating ourselves (no matter what colour you are) and for bringing up our children to embrace diversity, not fear it. There are lots of practical discussion points on how to talk about race with young kids and older kids. I recommend this book to every parent and even more so to those who think they don't need to read it.

Every parent, caregiver and educator (especially if you're white!) should read this book. Uju is a beautiful writer and her book balances joy, humour and pain to create a must read book for people with any interaction raising the next generation.

As a black woman and parent, this book not only offered me a perspective on supporting my children in this prejudiced world but also offered healing for my younger self as I reflected on my childhood experiences of racism. It's a confronting, yet compassionate and humourous read that, at the heart of it, encourages action over silence. I think that anyone who reads it will not only understand how to be an active participant in being anti-racist with their children, but will also understand the lifelong impact of what can seem to some children and parents like 'just a bit of fun' or a careless comment. And it's a book for *all* parents, not just, well, white people.

Great book. As a future parent I have learnt so much and this book helped me understand more some issues.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 October 2020
This is a beautifully written book that airs the subjects of race, prejudice, conscious and unconscious bias with a kind but steely attitude. Aimed primarily at parents of all-aged children, it goes beyond this and speaks to anyone who has experienced racism from any perspective, as a child, adult, parent, carer or grandparent. Uju Asika's family stories, and those of others she includes, show how pervasive prejudice still is and how much more we should be aware of it. Her tips on how to deal with racist bullying for our children are a gentle wake-up call for all adults.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 March 2021
An absolute must for anyone who has contact with children. Not only has this book opened my eyes to many low level irritations that many aren’t aware of, Asika has given me clear direction on how to raise my children to be kind and above all nice.
I love Britain because of its huge melting pot of different cultures, we are so much richer for it. I despise white supremacy and am determined to make sure my family have nothing to do with it. This book helps me accomplish my bit.
I also work in a secondary school and Asika has so much advice that will help me interact with all of the students making them feel valued and equal.
