This all starts very ordinarily in a residential home in Suffolk where genteel Stella is dying of cancer. She begins to confide in Genevieve (Jenny) her carer, who has lived all her dull life and loveless marriage in the same village and as Stella knows she doesn't have long to live, she tells Jenny about a passionate affair she once had and a secret house where she would meet her lover. Coincidentally Jenny has also started an affair with businessman Ned and when Stella gives her the keys to the forgotten house, it becomes a love nest for them too. But why has the house been left untouched for so long and what happened there?
For me as a reader, there is nothing better than discovering an unread Barbara Vine to immerse myself into. Excellent writing style (there are two main characters and Rendell cleverly allows the reader to empathise with both, feel what they are feeling, like who they like and dislike who they don't) discreet clues are dropped along the way, loved the untouched and remote dusty old house with the sixties gowns still in the wardrobe, Ford Anglia in the garage and champagne in the fridge - the nostalgia of it all. Nobody could touch Ruth Rendell in her prime, I absolutely loved it.
