I've found the 'Brilliant' series of manuals much easier to understand that other versions because of the well formatted illustrations and text. The Editor has done a good job by ensuring that various authors present their work in such a clear and comprehensible manner.

There are lots of social media books, so why bother with this one? Well, first off it is very easy to read. I'm not referring to its length, though at 260pp you won't be put off by the volume, I mean it is well-written, easy on the ear and a bit like listening to an extended presentation. The author, Adam Gray, is a speaker on social media as well as a writer and I think that is probably why the book has such a good conversational tone.

Secondly,it provides a manageable overview of the sprawling and rapidly-changing world of social media, points newbies in the right direction and also has some refresher lessons for those who have been using social media for a while.

Now - late 2013 - is a good time to get stuck into social media if you haven't already as it has become a necessary rather than an optional activity for businesses of all sizes now. Without a presence in social media your brand and your organisation just won't get considered as consumers and B2B prospects start to review their options. Brilliant Social Media addresses this point well and provides some light touch tips to planning social media use.

I particularly liked how the author addressed the fears of many businesses as they approach social media. Firstly they fear that if they give away content they will lose out to the competition, Adam Gray provides compelling arguments against this, including the obvious one that what you have to offer is rarely as unique as you would like to think it is. Secondly, the fear of doing something wrong and being publicly humiliated tends to paralyse some businesses and Adam Gray addresses this with some common sense advice on planning, training and being ready to deal with problems swiftly.

This book by Adam Gray explains in a very sound, engaging and well-reasoned way why every business needs to use social media.

It deals with the subject strategically and in a non-geeky way that will make it accessible to anyone who wants to find out about this subject.

Better still, it goes into just the right depth by way of practical advice and guidance so that, whatever your current familiarity with social media, you will get a series of useful recommended practical actions to take.
