What a brilliant book! I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was everything. The gay aspect was nicely underplayed. It was acknowledged and not hidden, but it didn't dominate. Other aspects of life: jealousy; wrong-doing; love in later life - all come into this book and it included a certain amount of eccentricity which added a lightness of touch. In many ways restored my faith in human nature.

Maverick (Rick) Matthews, escaping London and his unfaithful and abusive husband seeks refuge with his friend Becky in Brighton. Becky and Rick, now in their late twenties, have been friends for years, from their early financial struggles Becky is now a very successful high power business woman in line for Brighton Business Woman of the Year, while Rick, until his escape, has been supported by his wealthy financier husband Adam. Although Becky welcomes Rick with open arms, he feels obliged to find work and a place of his own, and so the scene is set for what amounts to 'Tales of the City (of Brighton)'.

Among the first we meet is Grace, Rick's new employer and soon to be close friend, retired, mildly eccentric and living above the shop she used to run with her husband in the better part of The Lanes. Jason, successful gym owner and Becky's new boyfriend but with a roving eye, will he prove faithful? Tom, Jason's friend and a personal trainer, admired by the ladies (but there is more to Tom). Once glamourous Barbara, now overweight and seeking Tom's services in an attempt to win back her husband's attentions. Max Hart, Barbara's philandering husband and local radio character, who along with his wife runs the high profile 'Scent from the Hart' in The Lanes. Peter, the young doctor who takes an interest in Rick. Adam, Rick's jealous husband for whom no trick is too low in his efforts to win back his lover. Cecile, Grace's pretentious and scheming daughter, married to a disgustingly wealthy banker who nonetheless has eyes on her mother's valuable Lanes property. These are but a few of the many characters populating this novel.

The Brighton Maverick is a very amusing and entertaining read, which I found all the more interesting due to my familiarity with the setting, Brighton. I would certainly read any follow up. However Armistead Maupin does not have too much to worry about unless Mr Chadwick ups his writing and also sorts out some very basic grammar issues.

I really enjoyed this book, the story had me gripped. I enjoyed the fact that it was split into mini chapters and that they followed several characters. I would have given this five stars but sadly I found some parts difficult to read, there were words missing from the sentence and quite a few times I had to re-read the same sentence and guess what word was meant to be there. That was the only thing thAt spoilt my enjoyment, other than that it was a really moving book.

Because I live in Sussex, this book I just enjoyed so much, as I know so many of the places and areas that are in the book, not that the book is not a really good and interesting read.
