Product Description

Product Description

At nearly 2 hours long, the DVD has all the songs on the CD plus three more, and includes revealing interview and studio vignettes woven between the songs. The added segments give the DVD, directed by Spookie Daly (Georgia Warhorse documentary and several JJ videos) a rockumentary feel, a la The Last Waltz. "On January 22nd, 2011 we all got together at The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Georgia for a wonderful evening of music. As always the folks that came brought the show to that level where time stands still and the evening becomes almost surreal. We want to thank everyone for bringing it and for making it so easy to play; without y'all we wouldn't get there. I've always felt that the music opens the door but we've all got to walk through it together. Our thanks to all the folks that night and every other night who've taken and hopefully continue to take that stroll with us". "Thanks to: Dan Prothero, Jesse Aratow, Daryl Hance, Cassie Siegel and everyone at Madison House, Jim and Nancy Devito, Derek Trucks, Spookie Daly, Rob "Daddy-O" Breitenfeld, Joshua Knight and Monterey International, Bruce Iglauer and the gang at Alligator Records, Chris Delucchi, Colin Peterson, Aaron Coteff, Danny Owen, Clay Daniel, Hal-Joe, The Hance Family, Mark Baxter, Suzi Matthews, Robbie and Lois Weitnauer, Brett Fitzgerald, Tim Padgette, Michael Wagoner at Gibson, Mark Baier at Victoria Amplifiers, Shane Smith and the whole crew at Bolt Amplifiers and as always, my family" - JJ Grey. I bought this CD/DVD set on the strength of an interview and his inclusion in a magazine band poll this month. Quite frankly this is in one word, awesome. How I've missed them so far is beyond me, not since Bruce Springsteen has I been so stunned by an artist and his band.JJ is from rural Florida, the concert's in Atlanta.CD is 78 minutes lond and the DVD 2 hours.DVD contains concert plus some great footage of his home area, looks like the swamp country, as well as excellent interviews with Derek Trucks among others, but all adds upto a superb film throughout. The band, well rock, blues, swamp, funky and more a really hot two man horn section, a quite brilliant and hot rhythm section, plus keyboards and guitar pickin' on both electric and slide,JJ has such a great voice, full and bluesy plays guitar and harmonica as well. You need to hear this, you really do, to grab hold of how superb this band are, a truly classic band if ever there was one. The songs range from some great blues based ones, to solid and funky rock, to more gentle ballads with a real bite.JJ writes songs of his home area, of his life.
This man is big in the USA but must surely break here soon. The Dave Matthews Band took awhile here, but do either get this album or one of his others, play it once you'll be well and truly hooked to one of the best bands on the planet today.5* doesn't seem enough for music this great, order with absolute confidence. If you like Southside Johnny, Lynyrd Skynard,Allman Brothers and bands similar believe me this is definitely for you.Get the word out J J Grey & Mofro !

I've been raving about this artist (well, maybe not on here) ever since Mofro released their first album. This was some time before frontman J.J. Grey decided to put his name before the band's.
Anyway, take any of their studio records and you will find the same exciting recipe of Swamp rock with Soul mixed in.
A logical move would have been a live album. This is what you get and, wait for it, a 2 hour concert DVD/movie.
As far as the live CD is concerned, twelve songs just ain't enough.
Starting off the proceedings with a lazy version of Country Ghetto followed by the slow, sax filled Woman it's hardly rock 'n roll. Brighter Days and Air further show Grey's soulful side. But the all hell breaks loose with the monster rock song that is War (his own song not the popular one). More dirtyassrock is to follow with Dirtfloorcracker and Ho Cake.
Excellent stuff!
The DVD has an extra 3 tracks with Hide & Seek, King Hummingbird and Slow Hot & Sweaty.
I rarely give out 5 stars but this one is more than worth it. Certainly together with the albums that went before.

I accidentally stumbled across JJ Grey by accident after reading about another band and the reviewer said, listen to "Lochloosa". Well ive been listening to great singers like Plant, Coverdale and Gillan, guitarists like Page, Young and Iommi, but this guiy beats them all hands dow.Listen to Lochloosa or Sun is Shining Down and you will hear passion and heartache like you have never heard, Sweet soul from a Gibson SG that Angus Young could only dream about. This guy writes everything, arranges everything and produces everything.
The music is so diverse that its hard to categorise.
The dvd starts with "War" and is a a great opener of a classic rock song.By the time you get to "Sun is Shining Down" youve been down every "Soul searching ,Blues breaking lump in the throat ballad" you ever want to hear.
Honestly why this band are not selling out arenas instead of little pub like venues i will never know.
The biggest favour is "Buy this" and everything else JJ Grey has done and just listen what you have been missing.
Truly a hidden gem.

I first heard this in an Edinburgh bar, and couldn't place who it was; there were shades of Joe Cocker, Delbert McLinton, 60's soul etc etc, but the songs were new to me. I got the band's name from the barman, looked up JJ Grey on Utube and was very impressed, and very surprised I'd never heard of him before. Difficult to categorise, but great to listen to.

On the DVD the guitarist Andrew Trube seemed to be having difficulty describing the musical style of JJ Grey and Mofro so I thought I'd assist him via the title to this review. This band has no equal and are well worth investigating with this CD/DVD of a live concert in Atlanta. The thing is, if they got big and international they'd lose that spice that makes them so musically fertile and unique. J J Grey is the front man of this remarkable outfit, but they are all a team of exceptionally good musicians loving what they do and being loved for it. Get some good Southern States stuff into your life and buy this package. It's not fashionable or anything tediously mindless like that. It's people from where Rnb and rock n roll originated enjoying what they do naturally without trying. You can't buy that sort of thing.......um....well you can if you buy this. If you like this package there are are a few other albums that are good too. The DVD has a few, short, interviews slotted in between tracks but that isn't a problem if ( strictly for medical reasons ) a few beers are imbibed.

Eamonn
