...A handy reference tool for anyone wishing to understand, in a critical but non-hostile mode, a particular religion they have encountered. -- J. Gordon Melton, Director, Institute for the Study of American Religion, Santa Barbara, California
A satisfying read for Religious Studies students, and an enlightening exploration of the phenomenon of religion for the general reader. -- Wendy Dossett, Lecturer in Religious Studies, University of Wales, Lampeter
Edwards writes with the clarity of a teacher and with the care of a scholar. -- Leslie J. Francis, Director, Welsh National Centre for Religious Education and Professor of Practical Theology, University of Wales, Bangor, UK
This introduction focuses on the contemporary fascination with the big questions about God and the supernatural, setting out clearly and fairly what people believe and the reasons they give for believing it. All the major faiths are covered, along with new and alternative movements associated with them. Space is also given to New Age, neo-pagana and occult thought, as well as to spiritualities of human potential and self-enhancement. This text should be especially helpful to students of religion and related subjects, and to geneal readers who want to know more about the most popular and influential beliefs in the world today.See all Product description

I have read several books that compare religions and beliefs. This is by far the most comprehensive book that I have read. It is well written and well organized. As such it serves not only as an engaging introduction to the diverse religions of our times, but it is also an excellent reference text.
