Mr and Mrs Bridge is a lovely gentle story, which captures family life in the pre/post World War II years in America perfectly. This Merchant Ivory film seemed to go under the radar, which is a pity, as it is a gem. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are wonderful.

It's not for everyone, because it seems at first that nothing of great importance is happening. But I think that's the point. The doors are slowly closing for this couple, and it is unlikely that anything of great significance is ever going to happen in the future to shatter the veneer of respectability that they have built up for themselves. The first time I watched it I wasn't as taken with it as I am now that I'm older. I found it slightly 'acted.' But I think it's meant to be that way. This pair are going through the motions of their lives like sleepwalkers. It got some great reviews when it first came out, but the public didn't take to it. And you can see why. For many middle aged people it will be an uncomfortable experience. It's a forgotten gem from two of the best filmakers ever. I believe it's going to be deleted shortly, so if you want something to think about, and love Merchant-Ivory grab it while you can. The photography is lovely too by the way.

I found this film very slow, perhaps unsurprising in a James Ivory production, though, also typically well-acted and beautifully shot and conceived. In the end, it is quite a good film, but just not my sort of film. I follows the lives of a lawyer whose emotions are in deep-freeze and his emotionally cowed wife and their family, all set just before the Second world War in the United States. Worth seeing once.

Nothing happens in this pleasant-looking, well-acted, plotless film. At regular intervals it seems like something might happen or at least develop enough to inspire an emotional response in the viewer, but as soon as an eyebrow is raised the film cuts away to another non-event. Frustrating. Until the very end when it seems certain that something will happen that will give the film some shape. It doesn't.
This film does keep reminding you that parents and kids don't understand each other and it will please Americans to see the affluent class and history on display. My only real enjoyment was realising, as the credits came up, that, despite all the expectation, nothing had happened.
Might appeal to retired middle-class parents.

I enjoyed the story but at times the audio was not good. However, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were excellent.
