This is an area of bridge poorly covered generally in relation to the more exciting field of declarer play, which in turn is dwarfed by the multitude of books on bidding systems. Yet 50% of bridge players time is spent defending.

Andrew Robson's logical presentation of the various principles, reinforced by many useful examples will help even the most advanced players to improve their technique, while ensuring the average player avoids the worst pitfalls.

I found the chapter on leads, with a table showing the relative merits (with probability of success) of each type particularly valuable.

My only problem was the in the Kindle edition, although the commentary font size can be varied, the example hands cannot be, causing some problems in interpretation by the visually challenged (like me).

I purchased the book as part of a fly-cruise packege (due to weight penalties) and recovered the cost in terms of prestige, as well as more material gains, as a direct result of the honed techniques learned.

Many thanks

This Kindle-book is a serious disappointment.
Andrew Robson's brilliant daily articles in The Times are the source for these books. The excellent printed versions present on a single page the layout of the cards and the text of Andrew's analysis. Indeed the product description of the e-book boasts of "..a compelling format, each page contains a lesson and an illustrative deal."
Sadly, on a Kindle Reading App (I have tried three computers so far) the text and the card layout cannot be viewed as one page. Thus the intention of the printed layout is completely lost. The product description is misleading in this regard. A problematic purchase.

The book is as good as the others in the series, my wife as a beginner has started to learn from it after finding defence a bit too difficult for a while (she found an old, used, version of a Zia book that's now out of print but was here on Amazon which she found better for the very basic stuff).

The problem is that Hands 1 and 2 in this book are relatively advanced - and he says so in the text, something along the lines of "But that's a relatively difficult one which we'll look at again later". So why start with 2 hands that may have some readers putting the book aside? That's what my wife did until I read a bit of it and told her it gets better from Hand 3.

Very un-Robsonesque! He normally gets the delivery/presentation at the right level throughout his books.

This book is clear and covers all the aspects of defence required by the average club player. It not only gives guidelines about which cards to play when defending but also encourages a player to analyse the cards played by both his partner and the opposition.
