Although dated, this is still a good book for the beginner. It teaches standard Acol and also includes sections on card play. It is clearly written, and easy to follow. On the down side, Acol has many new developments, which cannot be included in this book. There are more modern authors now available.

This is a good basic bridge book for beginners right through to general club players. It doesn't contain a lot of the most recently developed (and sometimes seemingly incomprehensible) conventions, you'd need a volume approaching the size of the Encyclopoedia Britannica to do that, but you certainly wouldn't go far wrong if you used this book as your bridge "bible". All the standard conventions and bidding techniques are included together with very useful guidance on actually playing the hands.

I have been playing bridge now for some 15 years and still often refer to this book.
