A book that every bridge engineer should have a copy of to hand

This is the bible as far as bridge analysis using grillage analysis is concerned. Many (perhaps most) offices of bridge and civil engineering consultancies will have a copy of this as it is such a frequently used reference. It is well written and clearly laid out with plenty of helpful illustrations. Dr Edmund Hambly draws on a wealth of experience in the profession to present practical approaches for the analysis of a wide variety of bridge deck types, providing assumptions and limitations of the various approaches. There are useful rules of thumb established by the author are widely used in the profession and have been for many years.

Particular focus is placed on the use of grillage analysis where a bridge deck is simply and efficiently represented by a grid of beam elements and analysed under various loading conditions for design and assessment. Whilst this approach was originally a major step forward from laborious and over simplified hand calculations to using computer programs for analysis, it was kept relatively simple in order to make efficient use of computer power. Whilst computers and software have now developed to cope with more complex and detailed modelling approaches in practical time frames, the grillage approach has stood the test of time and still has its place in modern bridge analysis, and some even some advantages, which mean it is still widely used today.

Whilst this book is comprehensive and rich with useful information, it is also written clearly and concisely so that it can be read and used efficiently by a Bridge engineer working to a deadline.

There is another book to consider on the same subject which is also very good, called Bridge Deck Analysis by Damien L. Keogh and Eugene O'Brien. The two books cover a lot of the same ground, but if choosing between the two, I would say that this book is the one to go for.

Once president of the ICE, there is now an annual award named after Dr Edmund Hambly.

Good for beginners

Faced with a detailed design of a reinforced concrete bridge for the first time, I was floundering. I am a mining engineer by training, you see, and went into the civil engineering trade. But Hambly came to my rescue. The book presents basic concepts in the analysis of bridge decks in a less cryptic manner than most academic books, and upon reading and re-reading, one should find that many concepts required in bridge deck analysis are presented quite well here.
