I saw this movie many, many moons ago on VHS, and I was expecting the Tartan Video version to be fairly crisp. It wasn't. The sound and picture were both of very poor quality indeed, so poor in parts that the dialogue could not be made out. Still, it's a fun gore-fest, so you roll with it and move on. But I'm annoyed that I got such a poor quality version when surely there must be better versions out there.

misunderstood sequel to the phenomenal classic Re-Animator. this film has been counted as "inferior" and i know why, because some fans don't seem to understand the "formula" of this film. this is a continuation which takes theoretical bites out of the classic 1930's film bride of frankenstein, which i own a copy of on vhs. this version IS the directors cut!

The original Re-Animator is rightly regarded as an all time-horror classic, and certainly when it comes to tongue-in-cheek gore-filled black comedies only the first 2 Evil Dead films come anywhere near it. Making a sequel looks to be a hopeless task, as the first film clearly tied itself up as a self-contained film, but while it requires a bit of suspension of disbelief from the viewer the script for Bride of Re-Animator does a tremendous job just managing to reunite most of the cast from the first film (half of whom appeared to have died at the end it) without completely throwing away the continuity of the first film.
It's a bit weird to see Herbert West attempting to give life to separate body parts here when in the first film he couldn't even manage to re-animate whole corpses without turning them into maniacal zombies, but it does allow scope for this film to explore a slightly different angle from the first whilst still retaining the feel of the original. The first half of the film is rather slow and boring, with only West's bizarre experiments in joining together odd combinations of body parts providing any entertainment. The ending is fantastic however, with a climax that rivals the ending of the first film for sheer over the top insanity, as West and eternal unwilling sidekick Dan Cain find themselves under siege from the now bat-winged head of Doctor Hill, his re-animated zombies (including a hilarious zombie cop who bursts in holding his badge as though making an arrest), the bricked-up earlier failed experiments of West and of course the 'bride of re-animator' herself...
Inevitably it's inferior to the original movie, but the combination of returning old favourite characters with some new improved gore effects means this will provide some entertainment for fans of the first film. Nowhere near as bad as it's reputation, Bride of Re-Animator is a fair stab at a very difficult sequel.

Though I'd always considered Bride of Re-Animator a fairly underachieved sequel, the question of whether the movie truly stunk or whether it just paled in comparison to the brilliantly cool original always nagged at me a little. So now after sitting through Bride of Re-Animator for the second time in thirteen years, I can put that niggling to rest: it's a pretty poor sequel...both compared to the original and certainly on its own.
The plot picks up eight months after the bloddbath the ended the first Re-Animator. Doctors West and Cain are back, setting their way through a whole new series of corpses. Before too long there are re-animated animals, zombified authority figures, and gibbering bloodstreaked undead galore.
Sad but true; Bride of Re-Animator suffers from that most common of sequel mistakes: This occurs when filmmakers, in a well-meaning effort to please the fans, rely far too strongly on plot devices and gimmicks recycled from the first instalment. Often the follow-up ends up feeling more like a remake than a continuation, and rarely does a situation like that make for a quality sequel.
To be fair, Bride of Re-Animator does bring something new to the table, (as the film's title clearly indicates) but very little of Bride of Re-Animator rises to its potential. Fans of the original may find themselves cheated, particularly if they think that a film as celebrated as Re-Animator would deliver a half-decent sequel.

If you enjoyed the first film you'll love this one. Re-animator and Re-animator 2 are undoubtedly the best conversions of Lovecraft to film. It goes past tounge-in-cheek and out the other side but it really works. Director Yuzna brilliantly converts Lovecraft's early 20th century story to a more modern setting and Jeffrey Combs brings the manic character of West to life in a way that no other actor could. I love this movie.

The good old days of latex and hand-made special effects. No CGI then!

Basic plotline revolves around the desire to re-animate the doctor's deceased girlfriend using her heart and other corpse's body parts. A police leutennant suspects something strange is going on from the evidence from the first film and is a threat to the experiment. Of course, in the lead up to and after the re-animation, chaos ensues from all angles and some amusing 'living' bodies/body parts join in the big fight at the end.

Who survives is down to you to guess!

A pretty decent old-school gory horror film. Sick yet comical. Could be better in some ways but that is usually the charm of these films - cheesy acting and OTT violence! 'Braindead' is the best example, check it out:
