Praise for Paulo Coelho:

‘An exceptional writer.' USA Today

‘His books have had a life-enhancing impact on millions of people.’ Times

‘One of the few to deserve the term “Publishing Phenomenon”.’ Independent on Sunday

‘Coelho’s writing is beautifully poetic but his message is what counts…he gives me hope and puts a smile on my face.’ Daily Express

‘“The Alchemist” is a beautiful book about magic, dreams and the treasures we seek elsewhere and then find on our doorstep.‘ Madonna

‘It’s like music, really, the way he writes, it’s so beautiful. It’s a gift that I envy above all others.’ Julia Roberts

‘A touching tale…Coelho is a beautiful storyteller, and he turns Brida’s tale of self-discovery into a beautiful story.’ London Lite

From the Back Cover

'But how will I know who my soulmate is?' 'By taking risks,' she said to Brida. 'By risking failure, disappointment, disillusion, but never ceasing in your search for Love. As long as you keep looking, you will triumph in the end.'

This is the story of Brida, a beautiful young Irish girl, and her quest for knowledge. On her journey she meets a wise man who teaches her about overcoming her fears, and a woman who teaches her how to dance to the hidden music of the world. They see in her a gift, but they must let her make her own voyage of discovery.

As Brida seeks her destiny, she struggles to find a balance between her relationships and her desire to transform herself.

A moving tale of love, passion, mystery and spirituality from the master storyteller and author of The Alchemist. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I have long been a fan of Coelho's work and have long waited for BRIDA to be published in English, so as soon as this was available I grabbed it. Having now finished it the question of whether it was worth the wait is an inevitable one.

BRIDA is the story of a young Irish woman, Brida, who wishes to learn about magic. At the very beginning of the novel, she meets a Magus from the Tradition of the Sun who teaches her about the Dark Night and who recognises that she does have a gift - he is just not completely sure what that gift is. Yet this marks the beginning of Brida's spiritual journey - to find out what her gift is and what her path shall ultimately be.
This path then leads her to Wicca, a woman who commands respect and stirs emotions within Brida that she does not always understand. Wicca takes Brida on as a student, teaching her the Tradition of the Moon.
So, BRIDA is basically the story of one woman's spiritual journey of self-discovery. Along the way she learns how to listen to the hidden music of the world and how she would be able to recognise her Soulmate. Brida also discovers that, as for anyone embarking upon a journey of self-discovery, the things that she experiences and learns have an effect upon not just her but those who are close to her. This, as Coelho tries to empart, is the nature of such a journey - once you have found the right path, to see it to the end and fulfill your destiny is not always an easy ride.

For fans of Coelho's work, BRIDA should be an enjoyable read. For those who have never encountered his work before, BRIDA may be somewhat of a disappointment. As with much of Coelho's work, the reader gets out what they are willing to put into their reading experience.

It's difficult to know whether to recommend this book or not. I'm sure many people will love it and quite a few will hate it. Coelho's books are very much about the message rather than the story, which is just a vehicle. If you are looking for a story with lots of action and events, this will not be for you, as not a great deal happens. If you want an accurate account of either witchcaft or Ireland, you are likely to be disappointed. If you want to know how to find your soulmate, this won't help much, either (basically, it seems that they have a light in their eyes and a point of light above their left shoulder, if you are trained enough to see it).
Some people have described this book as inspiring, though, and it is easy to see why. The book puts forward interesting messages about life and love. Those with some interest in spirituality will find much to think about, and many find in Paul Coelho's books instances which reflect or explain spiritual experiences that they have had themselves - and that can inspire. Those who think they have already found their soulmate will find either confirmation or food for thought. Those who believe there is more to life than just the moment, that there is some sort of purpose to it, will undoubtedly find something here and you certainly don't need to be into Wicca or sympathetic to it's ideas (which a lot of Wiccans, it seems, feel are misrepresented here anyway).
So, approach this as stimulus material, and you are unlikely to be disappointed. Most people know something about Paul Coelho and will have an opinion about whether they will like his books, and they are usually right. For those who like this genre, this book will entertain and may inspire.

Like all Coelho books, Brida deals with undercurrents in life and not just everyday adventures. This is about a girl named Brida searching for a deeper understanding of Witchcraft and love and finds out how intertwined they are and how much she develops as a person as a result. It's a really enchanting tale and the Magus is one of my favourite characters ever. I have only given this 4 out of 5 stars however because of the use of the name Wicca to describe a person rather than the religion - temporarily confusing when you first start reading!

Still ploughing my way through this; would have given up after the first few pages were it not for it being a book club choice. I have absolutely no idea, as yet, what it is about nor its point. If you are religious it may hold some interest but for me it is a load of pompous, posturing drivel.

This was the first novel I have read by Paulo Coelho. I was drawn to it by the interesting storyline; unfortunately that's all it has going for it. This is not good literature - neither the characters nor the plot have any depth to them. This will be the last Coelho novel I read.
