We bought this to replace an old Tower model which we had had for about 25 years and which had become rather inefficient. Amazon's price on this model beat everyone else and it was delivered very promptly. In response to some of the negative comments already made, I would say this:

The outer casing *does* feel very light - almost flimsy, on first inspection - but it doesn't affect the cooking, it isn't a safety hazard, and the product is sturdy enough in operation. The lid *isn't* a tight fit, and can rattle *a little* when the cooker is up to high temperature and the food inside is steaming, but we had no pools of water; nor were the kitchen windows dripping with condensation, the way they get with a steamer. The instruction book is somewhat basic, but it does tell you that for best results you should pre-warm the ceramic container, and for best flavour you should lightly brown/flash-fry things like chicken before they go into the cooker. Slow cookers do what they say; they are not quick solutions, and they also demand a little bit of prep work beforehand, if you want the best results.

All that said, it works very well indeed, either on the pre-sets or on automatic. For our first effort with this, we put a medium-sized gammon joint in, and it cooked perfectly. The 3.5 litre capacity is just right for the two of us, and will cope with a meal for four. Note that the instructions tell you to not to exceed about 75-80% of the capacity, so bear that in mind when you choose which one of these to buy, and don't fill it right up!

I previously had a round slow cooker which are harder to find these days. On the whole this is a good slow cooker which (unlike my last one) is heated 'around' (not from under). It performs well but the only thing which annoys me is that the lid rattles a lot and steam and liquid can escape as it is a ceramic pot with a glass metal edged lid which never seems to form a complete seal as with my previous slow cooker which had a ceramic lid. However, this does not seems to affect the cooking process or the result.

The oval shape is very useful both for doing roasts or cooking using a pudding basin.
The lid doesn't really fit so too much moisture escapes.
It's not bad for me as I'm retired and therefore not out all day, but for someone wanting
to put it on in the morning and leave it all day.......
It's too hot, even starting it on 'low'.

I took great care choosing my slow cooker and chose this because of the auto function. Although I was a bit concerned about other reviews saying it cooks very hot/spits water etc and mentions thermostat probs, I decided they must be the exception and plumped for this one.

How disappointed I was to find my new slow cooker arrived with poor quality crock pot (glazing uneven, and ceramic pitted) and there was very noticeable paint chipping to the base of the external painted finish and finger prints all over the glass lid. I nearly returned it on that basis, but decided to overlook it and give it a go.

I've tried 2 meals in it, and both were ruined by the insane heat of this thing. Meals that were meant to simmer all day (and set on auto cook precisely according to the instruction booklet to do so) were blistered within a few hours and 1/2ltr of liquids boiled nearly dry in 4hrs when it should have been on low. The auto setting is clearly not switching from the high boost at the start down to low after 1hr as it is supposed to. This is exactly what other reviewers had reported too.

So annoyed with myself for not returning this when I saw how poor the build quality was. Amazon return service was however good, thank you.

Very lightweight loose fitting lid, rattles noisily and lets steam escape if used on high or auto so cooker is soon standing in a pool of water therefore only useful for slow cooking, even then the lid MUST be in the right position preferably with a cloth and an earthenware ramekin to hold it still.I'm fortunate i have the time to use the slow setting so will keep it until i find one that is more robust.

I already have a slow cooker but I wanted another to cook vegetarian food separately while cooking meat dishes - we have 2 vegetarians and two meat eaters in our family. This slowcooker was on offer and because it was "Breville" I was a bit sceptical at first (I have not really been impressed with their products). However, I was most impressed with their slowcooker. White on the outside and grey glazed oval pot - good enough to serve up on the table. They say there is no need to heat up beforehand - I disagree with that. You need to get the pot fairly hot before adding food. I have cooked a number of dishes in this and they have all turned out wonderful! Well done Breville -you have restored some confidence!

Had this for a couple of months now and have to say that for the price I paid for it I am very very impressed. Easy to use (as the headline says) and even quite nice to look at. THe instuctions come with some great basic tips and recipies and I have used it to cook a variety of food including curries, chillis, pasta sauces, cassaroles, stews and even cuts of meat.

The AUTO setting makes life even easier as it essentially cooks your food and then leaves it on a constant but lower heat keeping it warm and tenderising any meat so it melts in the mouth. I use it to feed my small family of three but I would imagine that this would be perfect for students too. Simply great!

Slow cooking extracts the maximum flavour from good food and enables cheap cuts of meat to be made delicious. You can put soups, stews and much else into this cooker on its Low setting as you leave for work in the morning and then come back in the evening to a ready, hot meal. The High setting works just as well and delivers the goods in 4/5 hours. It comes with a useful recipe book - I particularly like the leek and potato soup.
