I never had a slow cooker before and the Breville had good reviews on Which. I didn't want to pay £60 for a Cuisinart which is the top of the range, so I chose that one, and let me tell you I'm not regretting it. I did a recipe of North Carolina pulled pork which was exquisite, the meat falling off the bone after 8 hours. It had plenty of juices in still - I had put the meat in with only half a cup of water, and nothing dried out. I'm so thrilled by this that I'm going to buy another one for my brother's birthday because he and his wife will love to cook with this. No need to go for the more expensive ones. This one is easy to use, has a very useful auto setting and is dead easy to clean. Plus, I prefer white to brushed steel = no greasy fingerprints.

We bought this to replace an old Tower model which we had had for about 25 years and which had become rather inefficient. Amazon's price on this model beat everyone else and it was delivered very promptly. In response to some of the negative comments already made, I would say this:

The outer casing *does* feel very light - almost flimsy, on first inspection - but it doesn't affect the cooking, it isn't a safety hazard, and the product is sturdy enough in operation. The lid *isn't* a tight fit, and can rattle *a little* when the cooker is up to high temperature and the food inside is steaming, but we had no pools of water; nor were the kitchen windows dripping with condensation, the way they get with a steamer. The instruction book is somewhat basic, but it does tell you that for best results you should pre-warm the ceramic container, and for best flavour you should lightly brown/flash-fry things like chicken before they go into the cooker. Slow cookers do what they say; they are not quick solutions, and they also demand a little bit of prep work beforehand, if you want the best results.

All that said, it works very well indeed, either on the pre-sets or on automatic. For our first effort with this, we put a medium-sized gammon joint in, and it cooked perfectly. The 3.5 litre capacity is just right for the two of us, and will cope with a meal for four. Note that the instructions tell you to not to exceed about 75-80% of the capacity, so bear that in mind when you choose which one of these to buy, and don't fill it right up!

I have never owned one of these up until a couple of weeks ago - when winter hibernation mode left me wanting a decent casserole. Before then I had thought they were a throwback to the 70's (much like the Teasmaid) that ate energy like Pacman ate little pills. My opinion soon changed when I saw the results. As the other reviewer points out, the Auto setting is fantastic, especially for cooking meals overnight or over a long working day, which not all slow cookers can boast. You'd think after nine hours of cooking you'd open the lid to a dried-out heap of mush, but no, everything is cooked to perfection with meat so tender it falls off the bone. Very little liquid is lost in the cooking process, so the ceramic pot is far from a chore to clean.

I bought the Hamlyn Slow Cooker book to go with it and found out that you can cook desserts and risotto in it too, as well as a heap of other quirky things so it's not just for winter but for all the year round. Best buy of 2010 so far.

This model is excellent as it has an auto unlike most models now if you look closely. This means it is even easier to use as when you leave it on AUTO in the morning you do not need to be around to turn it down. AUTO starts it on HI till it is the right temperature but then turns it down to low automatically. 'HI & LOW settings only' have to be done manually.

It's hard to think how this could be improved (maybe if it was self-cleaning!). Put in meat, veg and gravy, switch it on to 'Auto' in the morning and it's ready (and beautifully cooked) by the time you get home in the evening. Recommended.

This is the first slow cooker I have purchased. It has cooked everything to perfection. Just let it get on with the job and go back hours later and it has cooked meat to such a tenderness I have never been able to achieve before. It just gets on with the job without all the checking. It is nice to buy a product that actually does what it says it will.

Opted for this over some rival cookers (mainly for the Auto setting), and I am very happy with my purchase.

I have done a beef vindaloo and the filling for a steak & mushroom pie so far in it, and it has worked a treat.

I have had no issues with steam escaping the lid, as the condensation creates a liquid seal around the edge. If you move the cooker or lid, this will break the seal and allow steam to escape until a new seal forms, so be sure to set it up in a place where you wont move or bump it until it is done.

Cheaper diced beef was super tender after 10 hours on Auto, highly recommended!

It's not the most expensive but it works wonderfully well. The autocook function is slow cooking made easy. Stews and pot roasts are now easy, wholesome and not expensive to make. Well made and easy to clean.
