The Breville VKJ469 polished stainless steel Brita filter jug kettle combines modern design with high performance. It is high wattage--3 kilowatt (kW)--keeping the boiling time short to save you time and has a concealed element. This makes it easier to clean and more energy efficient than an immersed element, requiring a lower minimum water level in order to function safely. It has a capacity of 1 litre (l) and features Brita filter technology which works as the kettle is boiling. This Brita filter uses a mixture of carbon and ion exchange resin to remove hardness, chlorine, heavy metals such as lead and copper, and other organic impurities from your water to improve its taste, smell and appearance. The kettle includes a recyclable Brita Maxtra cartridge which features a Memo display that automatically reminds you when your filter cartridge needs to be changed. The VKJ469 is designed with an extra-large water window indicating water level to help you fill the kettle to the desired amount. And this window illuminates blue to red when boiling, making it easier to judge the correct amount and giving your kettle a sophisticated style. But the colours don't have to stop when the kettle isn't in use as there is Spectra--ever-changing colours when the kettle is on standby mode maintaining the stylish look. The kettle is fitted with a non-slip, 360° rotational base for left and right-handed usage and cord storage to keep your kitchen worktop fuss-free.

I've noticed a few problems with this particular model however. First off, and most worrying, is the build quality. It may have a stainless steel base however the plastics seem flimsy. Both the button operated lid and the boil switch are very lightweight. Furthermore, the kettle we have wobbles slightly on its base - I've checked that there is no obstruction or cable underneath - and cannot solve this. It actually teeters quite a bit when it is coming to the boil - not very reassuring.
Secondly, the filter area is too small. It doesn't fully fill the reservoir underneath unless you top up at least once which means that preparing the kettle is time consuming. The capacity in general is just too small for a family of 4 or more - which is ironic given it's one of the biggest kettles I've owned.
Finally, you can't really use the kettle without the filter. Lifting out the filter holder means you remove the inside area of the spout. This leaves an area from which steam can escape that is far too big. It would have been nice to have this option, as being able to quickly boil a larger quantity of unfiltered water is useful for washing dishes when you have left your immersion switch off.
All in all, I can't recommend it at the price, unless you are only going to be making 1 or 2 hot drinks at a time and absolutely love the design.
The kettle itself has a quite nice design, and uses a 360 swivel base, which is standard for most modern kettles.
It weighs more than a conventional kettle, but that is due to the stainless steel, and also filter inside of it.
The rubber grip on the handle is good, as it means when pouring a full kettle it wont slip, and even if you hands are slightly wet.
The kettle has LED lights which constantly change between colours, which some might like, but could become annoying at times, and also an unneeded waste of power.
The boiling time is quite good, and will boil it quite fast compared to cheaper models I've used in the past.
The kettle uses a filter system, where the water must go through that before it can be boiled in the base of the kettle. I've read people complain about this, but most filters take a little time, and this only takes like 30secs for a full kettle to filter through before you can boil.
The limit of the kettle is only 1 Litre, which is more ideal for non large boils. Basically this item is more ideal for someone who mainly uses it for cups of tea or coffee, and would prefer nice, crystal clear water, that does actually make the drink taste a little better.
Overall It is quite nice, but anyone thinking of buying it should only for the reasons I have mentioned, and not if they are boiling huge loads all the time.
UPDATE: Having used this kettle for a month it broke. The open lid button when pressed goes in and doesn't come out, which means I cant open the lid to fill the kettle or change the filter. Pretty bad design flaw I think.
The kettle boils at a reasonable speed, though obviously you have to wait for the water to pass through the filter, so if you are a real speed demon then a filter kettle is probably not for you. Using filtered water for your drinks is likely to improve both their taste and your health, so if you have the extra cash to pay for monthly filter replacements then it's probably worth doing. However, you should make sure that you have budgeted for these replacements before you purchase the kettle, as the kettle cannot be used without the filter part, and so you really are bound to buy them. This is also a disadvantage for those who want to boil water without using up the filter/taking the extra time, such as for washing dishes, hot water bottles or cooking pasta/rice.
The other major disadvantage to this kettle is its size. It has only a one litre capacity, and whilst that is fine for hot drinks, it is not useful if you are wanting to regularly fill up hot water bottles (unless you only like slim ones) or boil large amounts for other purposes.
In conclusion, this kettle is beautiful and functions well, IF you are using it primarily for drinks. If you use your kettle for a lot of large boils then this is possibly not for you.
