Deep fryers offer a number of tasty options for foodies. Use it to make traditional favourites like home-made chips with crispy fried fish or other such tasty treats as battered onion rings, chicken nuggets and croquettes. Indulge in some Asian cookery with tempura, golden pork balls and samosas or swap savoury for sweet with fruit fritters. The Breville VDF059 Stainless Steel Deep Fryer has a stylish rectangular shape and metallic body like those in professional kitchens making it a smart addition to your home. It has an immersed heating element and with a generous capacity of 3 litres (l) of oil and 1 kilogram (kg) of food is great for all appetites. It has a variable temperature control allowing you to choose how crispy you like your food and power on and temperature indicators to help alert you to its status. The ready-to-cook indicator automatically switches off once the fryer has reached your chosen temperature. There's no fear of burning your hands with the cool-touch handles and the enamel bowl is removable to help with the post fry-up clean-up. The cord storage helps keep your kitchen worktop fuss-free and when ready to pack away, the fryer unit dissembles and the basket's handles fold for easy cleaning and storage. Once your meal has been served and enjoyed, your used oil doesn't have to be immediately discarded thanks to the fryer's innovative Cool Zone technology. This economical feature ensures that any stray pieces of food that have fallen out of the basket don't burn and contaminate the oil, helping it last longer and so require changing less often.

Have owned lot of those plastic bin shaped attempts in the past. None have lasted long - they are difficult to clean and they go yellow after extended use.
This baby strips down to isolate the electrical components allowing the use of a dishwasher :)
It fries quickly and serves the best grub I have ever sizzled.
It stays clean much longer, saving on oil.
I recommend this fantastic product
10 outta 10 + five stars
I noticed that there is not one mention of the dimensions of this thing in the product description so here they are -
Height - 7.5 inches
Width - 6.75 inches
Length (with element unit on)- 15.5 inches
This one is pretty basic and not complicated to use at all and being made from brushed stainless steel it looks quite professional in the kitchen.
Out of the box you get -
- The fryer body plus lid
- A ceramic frying well/pan
- Frying basket
- The heating element/controller
You will need to take all the packaging out and assemble the whole unit which isn't hard if I can do it! All's you need to do is. . .
- place the ceramic frying well inside the stainless steel fryer body.
- Slide the heating element onto the steel body onto it's bracket and the bare element 'does' go inside the frying well.
- stick your basket in!
There are non slip feet on the body. The element section makes a click as you slide it onto the body, you know it's set correctly then and it won't work unless this happens.
You will need to put 2.5 - 3 litres of oil inside this to use it. There is a minimum and maximum mark inside the pan.
The fryer has one simple temperature control dial that goes from 130 to 190 degrees C. There is a quick reference guide in the instruction booklet recommending at what temperatures to cook the most commonly fried food. I've read a few reviews saying that the temperatures are out of spec but they cannot be 'that' out from my experience and I'm sure people know if they're chips or whatever need another few mins until done!
On the front is a power on light and a green light that comes on when the oil is up to temp. It only takes a few mins to get to 190, so It's pretty quick! There is cord storage on this fryer. It comes with the cord bound by a wire tie as most electrical appliances do.
In use -
You do not put the lid on this fryer when in use! It is only to make it safe after use and for storage purposes to keep the oil covered.
There is a lot of steam/vapours produced by the fryer. The body gets very hot so common sense would say do not under any circumstances leave unattended or let children anywhere near this!! There are stay cool handles on the sides but nevertheless let it cool before moving it.
I've cooked chips (of course), fish, chicken and home made beer battered onion rings to date with cracking results and home made doughnut balls! I'm going to check my massive library of unused cookbooks out for some ideas! :)
It's all steel and ceramic so quite easy to clean.
So, as long as you keep safety in mind this is a great device. I think a couple of years of use out of this before I need to throw it away will be good value for money.
Here's the recipe for those bite size Creme Fraiche Doughnut Balls if anyone is interested. . .they are dangerous to your health so make sure you eat no more than 30 at one sitting folks :)
You will need -
150ml Creme Fraiche
6 tablespoons Milk
6 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
100g Caster Sugar
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
A pinch of Salt
300g Plain Flour
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
Icing Sugar for dusting
- Mix the creme fraiche with the milk, vegetable oil, sugar, vanilla extract and salt.
- Mix the flour and baking powder and gradually blend into the mixture to make a smooth dough.
- Heat the oil in your fryer
- Form little balls with two teaspoons from the dough and fry in the hot oil until golden brown.
- Pat dry on kitchen paper and sprinkle with icing sugar and eat them within a couple of hours.
The adventurous types could mix a little cinnamon with the icing sugar or even inject them with a little jam afterwards if that's your fancy!
OK - it is a basic, no frills model with a flimsy outer casing that needs the weight of the inner frying pan and its 2.2 litres of oil for its stability, but not everyone needs a fryer built like a tank and offering dozens of functions, LCD panels etc. It is of a size suitable for 2-4 people if frying chips but can be used for other things, too, including deep frying fish, mushrooms or fritters. With fresh oil and a cleaned bowl, it can be used for making doughnuts although it will not accept more than 2 or 3 at a time. There are MIN and MAX level markings one one side of the bowl but, depending on the room lighting, they can be difficult if not impossible to see. They are easily found by touch, which may be easier for some.
If I have any criticism it is regarding the gross inaccuracy of its thermostat. As the first 2 or 3 batches were grossly overcooked after timings at settings that I had been used to using with prior fryers, I used a digital thermometer to check its temperatures - all were 40-50C higher than the markings would have me believe. That is rather excessive! I don't know whether this is typical for the model or the brand, but it should not be acceptable. After recalibrating the markings, I now obtain consistent results at least equal to or better than any other fryer costing rather more that I have previously owned. It has a cover but it is to be used as a dust cover and should be removed when frying. Without a filtered lid, oil vapours will readily escape into the room atmosphere.
Once cool, the oil can be poured off into a container, and the element wiped clean and the bowl washed. It is isn't too heavy to lift, even when full. The bowl is dishwasher-safe although the oil can polymerize and coagulate on it surfaces and may need a pan scourer pad to loosen and remove.
Oil drips on the outer casing can be removed with a soapy wire pad, if nothing else works although it may slightly damage the sheen. If it is not kept on the work surface when not in use, that need not be an issue.
Cheap and basic, no extras but with possibly highly inaccurate thermostat, which may give poor results if not remedied. Capable of excellent results if correctly set.
Hi everyone this is a great little fryer came on time no problems put in the oil and done some home made chips they were excellent, very easy to use and easy to clean.
This product will do enough for about 2 people but it is quick so if you decide to do more if needed the stainless steel finish looks the business, I would recommend this product to anyone have it about 8 months now working perfectly.
