Product Description

The Pick & Mix Collection from Breville brings on-trend 1950's retro style into your kitchen - featuring pretty pastels you can pick and mix from 3 stylish colours including Strawberry Cream, Pistachio and Vanilla Cream - all designed to complement each other perfectly, whether you choose one colour or a mix of all 3.

The Breville Pistachio Twin Motor Stand and Hand Mixer VFP061 from the Pick & Mix Collection brings a vintage vibe to a high performing mixer, keeping your kitchen as creative as your cooking.

For foodies with a sweet tooth, this mixer can take the slog out of baking, stepping in to help mix cake mixtures and icing and whip egg whites, cream and batters. For savoury food fans, this mixer can be used to mash potatoes without breaking a sweat, knead dough or make homemade dips, sauces and mayonnaise.

Being larger than a basic hand mixer, this mixer is great for heavier mixing jobs. Thanks to the freestanding unit, you can add additional ingredients or control the speed while the unit is in motion.

This mixer has a patented twin motor. One motor powers the beaters, the other rotates the bowl. By rotating the bowl, the beaters can reach a greater area within it, so your food is more efficiently and thoroughly mixed. Two rotating speeds offer greater control. The motor is 380 watts. Ten speeds give you the most appropriate degree of mixing for your cooking needs.

The mixing bowl is made from stainless steel for durability and has a capacity of 2 litres for liquids and 1 kilogram for dry food. A beater ejector push button allows for easy cleaning.

If you fancy using something smaller and more lightweight, the mixer is detachable. For increased control, it can also be used like a traditional hand mixer.

The colour of this mixer is not a winner for me, but one of my daughters likes it, which might encourage her to use it. I tried it out by whisking some eggs, whites first then adding yolks, to make a nice looking omelette and then followed one of the bread making recipes and have attached some photographs. My wife and I agree that the plastic components do not look to be of good quality, but I cannot actually say that this is true: it just looks a bit cheap and nasty, but perhaps it is down to the colour and there are other colours in the range. Following the recipe for bread you will be told to use a plastic spatula to push the dough from the sides to aid the mixing and kneading process and I would expect a spatula, balloon whisk etc to be included with the machine, but you only get a couple of mixing whisks and a pair of dough hooks. The recipe for bread requires 500g of flour and 340ml of liquids - not a large quantity to mix and you would not want to put more in the mixing bowl, so this is quite small in scale. The two electric motors which drive the machine are not overly laboured by such operations and you would not want to labour the mixer overmuch. I did not think that the dough seemed to be well mixed during the operation, but finishing off the kneading by hand - something necessary, I found that it was pliable and very elastic, so this job was done well and the loaf that resulted looked good enough to me. Whisking 3 egg whites was less succesful due to the very low volume: I added the yolks and a little cold water and this was more successful. You can remove the whisk section and use it for mixing and whisking without the rest of the machine and the whisk works quite well in this task.Read more ›

For me, the main question for anyone buying a mixer is - are you a serious user? If the answer is "yes" then this is probably not the machine for you - spend a little more and go for an Andrew James or spend a lot more and go for a Kenwood etc.

How ever, if you are a dabbler in home made baking or are starting out and don't want to spend a fortune, this will do very nicely thank you. It also has the benefit of the conversion into a hand mixer if required.

I'll ignore the colour as that is simply a matter of personal choice and there are alternative colours available. As to the usage:

Very small quantities do not mix well as, when in the holder, the mixing blades are a little short of the bowl bottom, you can, however, easily get over this by removing the mixer from it's base and use it as a hand appliance with the mix placed in a normal mixing bowl. Larger quantities seemed to mix well and, although I've not yet tried bread, I note than another reviewer has and has found it quite acceptable and I have no reason to disbelieve the reviewer.

The mixer has 10 speeds and the bowl 2 so the user can have no excuse for not mixing in accordance with any recipe. You are limited in how much/how large a mix to make as the bowl is only capable of dealing with 2 ltrs liquid/1kg dry food, but the size is good enough for the smaller family. The fact that the mixer has twin motors one for the bowl one for the mixer, being only 380 watts compared to 1200+ of the 'professional' models, doesn't mean it lacks power. I have yet to find it labouring whilst mixing.

So why 4 and not 5 stars?

The first thing that hits you about this mixer is the colour - it's quite a vibrant bubblegum pink. I'd prefer something a little more pastel-like, but if you love bright colours then you will love this. The mixer also comes in cream or pistachio, which look a little more muted, and you can get lots of matching items in the Pick & Mix range, including toasters, kettles, hand mixers and hand blenders, so if you want a co-ordinated kitchen this is a nice range to go for. I did find that the quality didn't appear to be fantastic, it appears quite plastic-y and the large black areas cheapen it a little. However I couldn't find any indication of the build not being stable.

The mixer is quite small, and so you won't be able to batch bake in this, but it's big enough for a tray of cupcakes or muffins, or a standard size cake. The benefit of it being smaller than other types is that it's light enough to lift in and out of the cupboard easily. The fact that the hand mixer detaches is useful as it means that you don't have to buy a separate one.

The mixer has 10 speeds, so you have quite a lot of control, and the bowl also rotates which means that less mixture gets caught around the sides. The whisks are perfectly capable - I've used better mixers, but for the price this is fairly efficient and will get the job done. I haven't used the dough hooks yet but it seems from other reviews that these are quite effective too.

This product is really for those who want something small, cute and easy to manage. You don't have to pay much more to get a considerably larger mixer with more functions and excellent reviews - check out the Andrew James range for good value mixers. But if you're happy with a smaller capacity, this is a nice little item.
