Product Description

Product Description

Perfect for either those looking to get serious about their cooking and baking or those looking to make light work of kitchen tasks, the Breville VFP040 Digital Twin Motor Stand and Hand Mixer is the ultimate tool. For foodies with a sweet tooth, stand mixers can take the slog out of baking, stepping in to help mix cake mixtures and icing and whip egg whites, cream and batters. Or for savoury food fans, they can be used to mash potatoes without breaking a sweat, knead dough or make homemade dips, sauces and mayonnaise.

This Breville Mixer combines the high performance of a stand mixer with the ease, speed and versatility of a hand mixer as the mixing unit easily detaches from the main stand to be used independently.

The Breville digital twin hand and stand mixer has a patented twin motor with one motor powering the beaters and the other rotating the bowl. By rotating the bowl the beaters can reach a greater area within it, so your food is more efficiently and thoroughly mixed and there are two rotating speeds to choose from for greater control. The Intelligent Motor senses tougher mixtures and adds more torque to power through thicker doughs and mixtures.

The motor is 500 watts (W) and there are 12 speeds so you can ensure the most appropriate degree of mixing for your cooking needs. The mixing bowl is made from stainless steel for durability and has a capacity of 3.8 litres (l). A digital LCD screen with a timer allows for great control and ease of use, whilst the extra-wide, spring loaded and rubber tipped beaters reach all parts of the bowl to fully combine ingredients. The unit has a beater ejector push button for easy cleaning.

I decided to do a video for this mixer so you could see it in action. I made a chocolate fudge cake, and show the performance of the mixer including the effect of the speed setting on the dry ingredients and speed of incorporation.

What I didn't say in the video:
The mixer comes with just one set of beaters whereas the old model had a separate whisk set for egg whites. I have not yet tested the new beaters on egg white but judging by their high performance on the butter and sugar creaming, I am sure that they will perform well. There is still a set of dough hooks which are slightly different shaped as is the spatula which did a really good job of getting every last bit of chocolate fudge mixture out of the bowl and into the cake tins. The spatula is very flexible and exactly matches the base of the bowl curvature.

Also I like the new style; the handle is rubberised and has smart styling with graphite trim and the mixer has a robust shape rather than the previous models somewhat quaint, old fashioned look.

I doubt I will use the older model as the new bowl depth and beaters etc have made such an improvement. I have looked at the prices of them, and of course the older model is cheaper, but still, if you need a good mixer I would either wait for this one to come down in price or buy it now if you afford it. There is little comparison other than the name and the dual motor (bowl rotating motor plus beater motor) to the former model.

Finally, the cake turned out great!

I recently started baking cakes again after not bothering to do anything other than dash off a few american style muffins now and again. So when I got out my 30 year old, 150 watt hand mixer it looked like time for an upgrade. My husband bought me the Breville as a christmas present.
I was quite excited about the idea of the bowl, stand and timer as I am trying out Madeliene recipes which call for 5 minutes mixing of the eggs and sugar. I was looking forward to leaving that to the machine while I got on with greasing moulds and preparing other ingredients.
First disappointment - you can't actually set the timer, it just records how long the machine has been running. If you stop it to see how things are doing, it resets to zero. I am quite short and the position of the timer is not that easy to see but it turned out not to matter as I have stopped using the mixer on the stand anyway. The reason for this it that the beaters don't reach the bottom of the bowl. I tried a standard 2 egg victoria sponge but the butter and sugar just didn't mix until I took the bowl off the stand and held the mixer by hand.
As a hand mixer it has performed very well and mixes very quickly. So I'm happy with that but no doubt I could have got as good a result with a cheaper product and would'nt have the stand and bowl taking up space in my cupboard.
Perhaps the mixer peforms better on the stand if you are making large quantities. The timer is just a gimmick.

Previously I was using big mixer & chopper in one but it was too many parts to wash, too many parts to connect so most of the time I was trying to avoid using it, unless I really had to. This is not the case with Breville Digital Twin Motor Stand And Hand Mixer. It is really very easy to use, to wash and operate. Except the stand there is only a bowl, whisk or dough mixers and the spatula... that's it. So simple and that is really all you need for all baking tasks. You can whisk the egg whites, make whipped cream, make butter cream or prepare the dough for a cake or even bread (with dough hooks included).

There is no lid so you don't have to open it every time you need to add something, just drop it in the bowl while mixer is on, only remember to add gradually dry substances such us flour or icing sugar to avoid cloud of powder over your kitchen.

If you need to stir something quickly you can use it as hand mixer that releases very easily from the stand with one push of the button.

The whisks are not identical so you need to attach them accordingly to the illustration on the top of the mixer. But don 't worry, smart people at Breville made them this way that if you put them in wrong order they won't attach properly (it has happened to me already). Afterwards they can be easily released with a push of the button as well.

If I could wish for anything else added to this mixer would be spare same size bowl so I would not have to mix and transfer egg whites into different bowl to stir the dough.

The little booklet that came with the mixer has couple interesting recipes but after I tried one of them (the mayonnaise) I wasn't brave enough to try anything else. The mayo come out awful, 100ml is a whole lot of vinegar for 3 eggs...

But forget the booklet, the mixer itself is very good and I recommend it. Actually I don't know how could I live so long without it?!

I think Breville is a good brand and they are especially good with kitchen equipment like this mixer. We have two of these Stand Mixers in our family now - my parents have one, and we have one. It can be a little disorienting to see the bowl rotating as well as the mixer beaters at first but it does make sense and it does work to reach areas that other mixers might leave unmixed. At the moment I mostly use this one as a hand mixer since my old hand mixer finally went kaput after many years, so it's been incredibly useful to have the ability to detach the mixer unit from the main stand in this way. With 500W motor and 12 speeds - 12!!! - there is a lot of flexibility possible to fit any of your mixing needs. It has a great stainless steel bowl (which I also use for other things too because I like it so much) and the digital LCD screen is a nice touch. Not had a digital food mixer before this one.

In the box was:
1 x Breville VFP040 Digital Stand & Hand Mixer
2 x Stainless steel beaters
2 x Stainless steel dough hooks
2 x Stainless steel whisks
1 x Spatula
Instruction booklet including recipes and mixing guide

I haven't even looked at the recipes in the book as I have plenty of cookbooks already. This review is based on my own experience with the product 4/5
