Handy gadget let down by the instructions as usual.

A canny little device that saves a lot of struggling about behind furniture, but, it has to be set up first. You have to toggle very small switches in a confined space in the plugs. I used a nail file, strong table light to see in there. The instructions are not too bad except for the diagrams showing which switch is up or down. It shows a oblong box divided in two, one black and the other white but not which is on or off. I tried the instructions given by a previous buyer but could not get it, struggled for about an hour then gave up and used the given instructions in the box ... 10 mins and all done ... It appears to do what it is said to but I only give 4 stars as the instructions as usual with many devices need sorting out.
BUT, two weeks later, one of the plugs has failed,LED does not light and no sound of click when button pressed. It had flickered a time or two previous days then failed completely, shame ... it was handy.

Ordered and received this item within the specified time period. I selected this item based upon the reviews and number of reviews on the Amazon site. Contrary to some of the reviewers I found the setting up of the transmitter and receiver plugs straight forward. It's strange that the transmitter remote control has 4 sets of on/off buttons but only 3 receiver plugs are supplied with this item and it' s not possible to buy the receiver plugs separately. As it happens I use one receiver plug to switch on/off my CCTV monitor and the other two receiver plugs configured to the same settings to switch on/off two lounge standing lights positioned in opposite corners of my lounge. On the odd occasion when switching on the lounge lights only one switches on, however this isn't a problem as another switch on of the button switches that light on. I've been using this item for a number of weeks now without problems. I have an electricity usage monitor and there is no significant power used by the plugs them selves which run run cool. 5 stars for this device although it would be an advantage to be able to buy aditional receiver plugs separately as I have two spare sets of on/off switches on the transmitter remote.

Well made and easy to program. For me, setting the little switches is quicker and more certain than the rather vague wireless pairing that my previous set had. Worked straight away, plenty of range.

Mine arrived with the body pointing down, as others have reported. So they won't clear the skirting board, and look odd because the writing is all upside down. If you don't mind a couple of minutes DIY it is easy to fix. The only tool you need is a Y5 screwdriver (3-wing 5mm). Remove the two fixing screws, click off the back, lift off the round cover plate. Bend the red wires to allow you to wriggle the plug unit out, and re-insert the other way round - there are clicks to locate it either way. The wires are thick and need a bit of bending, but will all fit back inside. No electrical work or soldering is required. Then pop back the round plate and the outer cover, and do up the screws again. It is clearly designed to go together either way, but I do wonder why anyone would want it assembled upside down!

Now to see whether it lasts longer than my previous Maplin set, which gave trouble almost from the start and died quite young.

These are set up using small switches (choice of 32 sub-channels to avoid any clash with a neighbour's system, and which set of buttons a receiver/plug responds to). This means the setup info isn't lost during a power cut - the bane of 'plug and play' systems. It's well-made and switching is done with a relay (not a triac) rated at 12 amps. The maximum continuous rating is 1kW, limited by an internal 5 amp fuse (not replaceable by a non-technical user), rendering the 12A relay conservatively rated for surges.

It is 100% compatible with the Silvercrest item sold by Lidl in about 2011, even to the extent that the 5th pair of buttons on the Lidl controller can be set to control one of these sockets (select switch E, despite the manual saying you can't use it). So I have extended my Lidl system to 5 controllable circuits and have a spare handset (though this can only control the first four sockets).

Note: the manual refers to Schuko (German) sockets, but this item has British 13A connectors.

Update after use: The socket is temperature sensitive - we found that the range decreased seriously when it gets hot, as it did when used near stage lights in a theatre. Max. temperature spec. is 35degC - we might have exceeded this but there were no lasting effects. The problem is it has an analogue radio receiver that goes off tune when too hot or too cold.

Added extra, which might not be intentional... You can actually control up to 15 individual appliances with one handset! This comes about because if you set more than one of the switches A thru' D in a socket to ON (say A and C), then pressing buttons A and C on the handset will turn that appliance ON or OFF without affecting anything assigned to be controlled by A or C on their own. The proviso is the buttons MUST be pressed and released simultaneously; eg. pressing A & C simultaneously but releasing C before A will affect both the 'A & C' and 'A only' appliances. The theoretical 15 circuits are: A thru' D on their own (4 circuits), any combination of 2 buttons (A & B; A & C etc. - 6 circuits), any combination of 3 buttons (A, B & C; A, B & D etc. - 4 circuits), plus all 4 buttons.

Great Quality Remote Control Sockets For My Workshop

I bought these for my PC repair workshop as I have a row of sockets underneath the bench that are right at the back. These are the perfect solution to avoid crawling about under the bench and have freed up 3 sockets at bench height. Good quality and perfect for me as they are produced with the socket at the top and the body underneath which enable them to fit under the bench.

Most I looked at are the opposite way round and cannot be plugged. A great purchase and easy to set up via the little dip switches in a matter of minutes.
