Chris and Keith are a gay couple, traveling a busy Arizona interstate, when suddenly cars and trucks all around them start careening out of control, and they barely manage to dodge their way out of joining the others killed in the resulting accidents. Exiting the freeway, they rescue a Highway Patrol officer trapped in the passenger seat of a crashed car, after - she said - her patrol partner simply disappeared and the car almost careened off a ramp. All over town, and all over the world, people are telling similar stories, of horrible accidents apparently caused by someone simply disappearing. Other people reportedly vanished from offices, their homes, or places of work. The government calls the accidents the result of a massive, lateral earthquake, but nobody felt any tremors. Some conjecture that this must be the first sign of The Rapture predicted in the Old Testament, and believers anxiously wait for the further devastation and death to follow. But it doesn't. If anything, things seem calmer, more serene, and - as people are prone to do during an emergency - everyone seems to get along better. A journalist does research to fit a profile to the people who are gone, and comes up with an amazing theory. Will mankind ever know for sure what really happened?
In this devastatingly original novel, the author paints a captivating and enlightening look at mankind's spirit and resilience, using characters as diverse as a conservative military officer and the artist son of free loving hippies. The story makes perfect sense in our world that is anything but perfect, and celebrates the innate good of most people. Not at all "preachy" or manipulative, the story helps you reconcile your own feelings about our world. Bravo! Five sunset-kissed stars out of five!
Wonderful character development and a pace that won't let you rest till the book is done.
Regardless of your personal convictions, you will emerge transformed by this compelling work of art.
Have you ever tried to express your feelings and beliefs and not been able to find a word to describe them. I think it's sad we all categorize each other. You have to be either and atheist, agnostic, christian or deist, etc.
Some of us, I think a lot of us, don't fit in a any of those boxes. We see the world through a totally different perspective.
Kurt Niece did a great job of portraying this in his characters. He gets down to the basics of simple humanity and kindness, our natural instincts. He ties realities and laughter into a very refreshing yet insightful read.
This book has a spin that you would never imagine and yet after you read it, you think to yourself, not a bad idea. :-)
Keep writing Kurt, the world needs your insight!
