Brilliant read, matched by sadness, but after 16 years why am I the first to write a review? One is left in a state of great confusion - how could human beings keep people alive on a death march just to extract as much pain as possible from the human frame. This massacre took place in the woods at Surberg, just outside Traunstein in Southern Bavaria on May 3rd 1945, and just before the Americans took the surrender of the town. 61 people were killed, all (?) Jews who walked from Flossenburg concentration camp 150 miles away. There seems to be different accounts of the same event. One report says that they were taken off a train and marched through the village to the place of execution. Kurt Messerschmidt relates an event not far away in Hufschlag, in which more jews were killed. Both incidents occurred just outside Traunstein, at approximately the same time, it had been snowing, and the SS from Ukraine were particularly brutal in both cases. The local German community were generous, kind and brave in their response. Leo singles out in particular the Mayor of Traunstein and his wife for the medical help provided. The Americans arrived too late to save many from death, but those who survived were full of appreciation for their help.
