"A riveting, powerful, more-dramatic-than-fiction, true biographical story of life and death upon the open sea."
"John Beattie is like a lot of people who are bitten by the bug to go cruising. He doesn't have much experience at the outset, but he has a dream: to sail around the world. Sparked by a book he read as a child, the dream nurtured over 20 years, he finally decides to take the plunge, get some sailing experience, buy a boat, and go." -- Coastal Cruising "Coastal Cruising, October/Novemeber 1998" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is a great read. It allows the mere mortal to experience through this skippers eyes what it rreally is like to sail the high seas and feel extremely vunerable. We are so used to reading about hardnosed skippers such as McCarthur who have nerves of steel and take these worries in their stride, so it was very refreshing to be as scared as the skipper while reading this book.
You also get to share the highs and lows of the things that can break on a boat, and become frustrated with the issues that get in the way of fixing these problems due to lack of money or facilities.
Well worth a read. If you have any doubts about whether you will enjoy it, DON'T, if you like to read about people sailing the seas then you will love this book. I wasn't disappointed.
He re-read it immediately and keeps going on about what a wonderful book it is. So, from one sailor to another, highly recommended.

Very enjoyable read. It is not over romanticised and gives descriptions of not only the journey but also an insight into the relationship pressures of travelling in company.Published 19 months ago by SWFC
I am not a sailor and never will be, sounds far to uncomfortable for me. However love to read true life sailing adventures and this one was great.Published on 21 Dec. 2014 by Vivien Ogden
