In 2011, comedian and podcaster Rosie Wilby was dumped by email... though she did feel a little better about it after correcting her ex's spelling and punctuation. Obsessing about breakups ever since, she embarked on a quest to investigate, understand and conquer the psychology of heartbreak.
This book is a love letter to her breakups, a celebration of what they have taught her peppered with anecdotes from illustrious friends and interviews with relationship therapists, scientists and sociologists about separating in the modern age of ghosting, breadcrumbing and conscious uncoupling.
Mixing humour, memoir and science, she attempts to assimilate their advice and ideas in order to not break up with Girlfriend, her partner of nearly three years. Will this self-confessed serial monogamist, and breakup addict, finally settle down?

A good read you can pick back up at anytime , anywhere , although you won't want to put it down .
I'll certainly have a few ideas now for Christmas presents for certain friends , This book ✓
On one level it's a story about what love really does look like through different lenses. Through another, its a deeply personal story about our fantastic writer who takes us on her journey of making sense of it all (through some brilliant footnotes and fourth-wall-breaking moments!). It's equally a story about a creative finding their voice through every subsequent gig, experience and the sum total of the journey.
I could say so much and yet still fall short of capturing what this book truly is, so do yourself a favour and just click buy. It will leave you laughing, holding yourself and the bundle of emotions, and leave you feeling better every time you put it down. This book deserves to be in the 'special reads' shelf of every book nerd, and you can bet it'll be on mine.
Historical Law is a very useful addition as is the other research which clearly went into this book.
I’d say if you have a friend who’s just broken up, get the book, give it 6 months and drop it on their coffee table when they’ve gone to make the coffee (unless it’s instant, in which case send them the link). Meanwhile buy it for yourself, but warn your partner first.
If Rosie were to try her hand at fiction, I think there’s plenty here … or maybe screenplay. Having now seen her talk about the book, I can recommend the book and author for entertainment.
Love the various lists and guides that appear. The list of Ghosting spin offs that now appear in general language are explained. Hilarious summary that I wont spoil.
The fact that Rosie broke up with the Edinburgh Fringe is classic. ‘The mother of all abusive relationships’ - so true.
As another reviewer commented Rosie has a true gift for writing and could easily turn her hand to a fictional novel or screenplay.
Read and really enjoy this book as a guide and as a lesson in life.
