Review

"This book covers all the areas that I consider essential to my own and my patients' wellbeing - stress management, nutrition, work/life balance, present moment awareness, emotional wellbeing, physical health and efficient breathing. Providing evidence-based explanations and with useful practical exercises across all of these areas and more, it is essential reading for anyone who knows that there are elements of modern life that are not healthy, and who wishes to make changes. It is a fascinating, wise, thorough and potentially life-changing book." -- Elizabeth Turp, NHS primary care counsellor and author of Chronic fatigue syndrome/ME: Support for Family & Friends "This book has been written by a healthcare professional who has been through the chronic fatigue journey themselves and is aimed at both those going through the difficult journey of ME and the healthcare professionals working with those people. You can pick and choose your way across the chapters, choosing whichever needs or symptoms you want to understand and work with. Each chapter has focused exercises and summaries which means you don't even necessarily have to read the entire chapter. From a healthcare professional's point of view, there are plenty of technical references to get your teeth into. I like the way the book also encompasses the mind/body connection as well as the more grounded physical aspects of working through chronic fatigue." -- Laurel Alexander, author of How to Incorporate Wellness Coaching into Your Therapeutic Practice Lucie Montpetit's unique program, laid out in this book, combines scientific research with principles from psychology to equip the reader with the knowledge and capacity to help themselves, and feel the positive impact of doing so. -- Nicole Seguin, Clinical Psychologist, Montreal, Canada

Format: Paperback
There are many books written by people who claim to have healed themselves of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Luckily this one offers more than the promise of a quick fix. Breaking Free from Persistent Fatigue is among the most thoughtful and meticulously researched self help books out there and is worth a look at even if you're a jaded veteran like me whose M.E. has outlived them all.

Lucie Monpetit is an occupational therapist who brings a thorough multidisciplinary grounding to her theory of body-mind imbalance. She offers a compendium approach to addressing the multiple factors that can trigger the "psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrine imbalance" that she believes to underlie conditions like ME/CFS. Diet, environment, lifestyle, viral infection and psychological strain are all considered in detail. This book is no substitute for the proper scientific research that has been so shamefully lacking into this illness. But I would recommend it to anyone who wants to think long and hard about what may have provoked their illness and take steps towards a better way of living.

I have given it 5 stars because it has many excellent and useful recommendations and I can see it working for many people. However, it pays to bear in mind that the writing is a little convoluted (and all those split infinitives are irritating e.g. 'to better understand' which occurs all the way through) but if you can overlook such things the advice is sound and practical - and satisfying.
In its favour too, the author directs you to specific chapters (the book is written for professional as well as for public at large and certainly several of the tables smack of pseudo science - but, once again, get past that and the benefits are worth it).

5.0 out of 5 stars a full-spectrum guide, with downloadable tools 13 Aug. 2012
By pencil and pen name - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I found this newly-released book in my library and was not expecting much, as I thought I'd read everything on this topic. What sets this work apart is its wide-ranging, full-spectrum look at fatigue and oneself, with thirty-four pages of appendices that you'll want to print (in PDF format, via its considerate download site) to use while referencing the book's detailed explanations of what can impact one's energy balance.

The book guides one through both self-examination and practical application with the help of supporting tables and exercises (approximately two dozen) that help to organize one's observations and accordingly make adjustments and strides---alone or with professional support.

Finally, I find a book that consolidates so much and gives whole-life tools.

I certainly want my own copy now, as an ongoing reference, and I'd also like to show it to some who have been helping me look for clues (as to attaining a better quality of life/energy). What professional who hears "chronic fatigue" from a patient (or client) wouldn't love to offer the tools in this book?
