How many times have you read a book described as ‘hilarious’ and struggled to raise a smile? I can guarantee this is not one of those novels. I laughed out loud on many occasions.
I’d like to commend Canelo for deciding to publish this book. In the current climate, most publishers want something safe – a newer, slightly different version of something that sold well.
Breaking the Lore doesn’t fall into that category. It is very different. From the nature of the crime to the cast of characters.
In another novel, Nick Paris could fit into a central casting image of the hard-drinking, cynical cop but here he has other dimensions. He has to get his mind round the idea the magical world exists, and he’s required to solve a crime committed against one of its inhabitants. Worse, he has to work with a cast of magical creatures, as if his dim sidekick Bonetti, didn’t give him enough to contend with.
The most memorable is Malbus, the chain-smoking, wisecracking crow. Not content with creating such an outlandish detective, Redsmith has filled him out into a believable character. Others get the same treatment.
Alongside the laughs you have an unfolding criminal investigation which propels the story along.
A highly original and entertaining novel and I’m looking forward to the next one.

This is such a fun and engaging read. The protagonist, Nick Paris your archetypal , heavy drinking police detective, and his not so bright sidekick Bonetti, finds himself investigating the murder of a tiny fairy found at the bottom of a suburban garden. He is helped, and hindered along the way by a collection of weird and wonderful magical creatures, both good and bad. . All the characters, both human and and magical, are beautifully described in such detail that the reader can both see and smell them. The actual detective story weaves its way through a range of subplots before reaching an hilarious finale. It is witty, clever , unique and original . Can't wait for book two. Go buy this one and be prepared for a fun ride.

This is a fast well-written comedy set in Manchester with fantasy elements. The characters are clear and well drawn and the plot moves fast. The jokes are funny and relentless. You'll be laughing all the way through.
I wouldn't really compare it with Terry Pratchett, which is part comedy, part fantasy novel itself. This is much more like red dwarf which is purely a comedic show without any serious sci-fi. That's not to say there isn't good worldbuilding in breaking the lore, it's that its world building is there to make you laugh even more, not to tell a fantasy story.
There's a sweet romance element and the novel never becomes predictable. Overall a great comedic read.

This hilarious crime fantasy novel is told primarily from the perspective of the cynical detective at its centre, Nick Paris. We follow Paris' bewilderment as he discovers that the victim of the latest crime he's tasked to solve is a fairy, and the world he thought he knew is also occupied by magical creatures. We're introduced to a huge cast of them in this novel, but they are each drawn distinctively, from Malbus the chain-smoking crow, to my favourite, Grarf, the demon with a heart.
The plot is fast paced, and the author raises questions throughout, adding to the sense of intrigue. Manchester is the primary setting for the story, but we also travel to the magic world via a portal. This is a highly entertaining novel, there were many parts where I laughed out loud and I'm looking forward to reading the second instalment.

The book's humour had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions and the plot only have away its secrets sparingly, thus keeping me hooked throughout. The characters were varied and interesting, with the main protagonist, Paris, particularly well defined and developed. The concept of the interaction between the world of magical creatures and that of human society felt original and drew me into the evolving story. I would definitely recommend this novel to others and I look forward to reading the following books in the series.

Breaking the Lore is a murder mystery with a difference: the body is that of a crucified fairy! But the narrative, as it unfolds, is far from fey. The novel draws us onwards with its cracking plot, sharp humour, excellent characterisation and witty dialogue. A must for people who enjoy the work of Terry Pratchett.

Funny and engaging. It's an interesting first proposition, the magical world breaking through in suburban Manchester and bringing it's own crime scene with it. How should a normal whisky drinking detective cope? The humour is deadpan and punning, the story is fun and takes you along. I liked it and will read the next.

Very enjoyable, really good northern version of the Peter Grant series, different style of writing. The northern humour is one of the best things in this book
