So Anti-pop-consortium meets EL-P in a seedy nightclub where the music sucks, they adjourn to the alley for a knee trembler and the resulting offspring is taught to speak by Aesop Rock. Well.. not quite. Breaking Kayfabe sounds nothing exactly like these brave new pioneers of modern hip hop but you can see the family genetic footprint. This is a very accomplished record. A frankly stunning record. Sharing the production ethic of avoiding heavy samples for self programming the bleeps, bloops and heavy synth waves of the aformentioned artists. Its a wonderfully rewarding record and requires several listens to fully begin to digest the intricacies of the production. Cadence Weapon, (poet laureate in his hometown of Edmonton, no really) has a delivery similar to Aesop Rock to my ear, very poetic but a little more decipherable.
Standout tunes? well, it seems more of a whole body of work, every song is so interesting but '30 seconds' a sharp song about the advertising industry is probably my pick of the bunch. 'Black Hand' and 'Oliver Square' are also serious contenders.
If you like El-P, Aesop Rock, A.P.C.,Death Grips and love the way this new hip hop 'sound' is moving, get this.....
Its like £3.00 or something, seriously!
This review name checks a lot, Guilty. Its some sort of starting post, a general area to almost describe the sound.
Truth is, this is a very unique record and you should hear it for yourself.

This Album had me listening to it for months on end i i still find bits that suprise and delight me.

This is first and fore-most a rap album, but where it differs from the often stereotyped genre is its use of electroni noise and distorted melodies. The lyrics themselves are far more "real" as they descibe life in a way that everyone born after 1985 can relate too. I know that this sounds like a cliche but truly it is fantastic.

I would recomend this album to almost anybody even those who have the opposite taste in music. This gets my highest recommendation as does the brilliant after party babies (the second album)as i don't like rap music as a general rule i'm far more noise, post rock and punk inclined so for this to be one of if not my favourite albums is truly special.

This is a great album with great ideas and and great promise for the future, have a listen and enjoy I urge you do not miss one of the defining albums of the last few years if not the decade. i hope this was helpfull.

Only "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" by El-P is a better hip-hop album so far in 2007, although Aesop Rock might have a few things to say about that come August. Breaking Kayfabe is a guy from Edmonton, Canada who produces his own incredible beats with that warped electronic kind of sound of which the aformentioned El-P is a master. The lyrics are tight and touch on themes from wack emcees to anti-globalisation. This is an extremely fresh sounding album from a very promising talent (a desperate rarity in today's hip-hop), and anyone who's ever played the videogame Silent Hill will go crazy for Track 3 as well.
