Product Description

Product Description

Richard Warwick and Joanna Lumley star in this sexy, exuberant social satire charting the travails of an angry young man reacting against his environment. Adapting his bestselling novel, director Andrew Sinclair draws on his own youthful experiences: The Breaking of Bumbo is a time-capsule portrait of military rigour competing with the era's burgeoning sexual and social freedoms, set against explosive scenes of Swinging-Sixties London. Denied a theatrical release by EMI and only intermittently shown on television, The Breaking of Bumbo is presented here uncut in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements and in its original aspect ratio.

Bumbo Bailey, a newly commissioned Ensign of the Household Brigade, becomes quickly bored with the social life this entails. This boredom is rudely shattered when he falls in with the luscious Susie and her friend Jock, bourgeois revolutionaries whose principal occupation is organising anti-war demonstrations. Sensing Bumbo's general dissatisfaction with everything they try to manipulate him into a course of action which could have dire consequences for his future.

Many potential purchasers of this film (regardless of its merits) will be interested mainly in one element: Joanna Lumley. If you are one of those potential purchasers, don't waste your money.

Despite its assertions, this film is NOT uncut. The famous scene involving Miss Lumley is heavily edited, removing not only her particular assets but even the shot where we see that she has "carved" words ("Make Love, Not War" or something along these lines, if I recall from Channel 4's broadcast of the full film many years ago) into Bumbo's back with the point of his own sabre.

Basically, this is the same print as was released in Region 4 in Australia a few years ago. If you have that version, don't bother with this one.

If you're interested in the film itself, however, this is an excellent DVD transfer. "Uncut", it is not.

Greatly over-rated, probably due to restricted availability. The idea of opposition to the government did not come across. I was very disappointed by weak script & presentation, despite good performances by the principal actors

It's very disappointing when you purchase an item and would like to view it in its entirety, this is not. As other reviews have stated, this is a heavily edited version.. Along with this I have the version from Australia, hoping this would be uncut I was disappointed to find it's exactly the same version.
Oh and if you wish to purchase the recently released 'Games that lovers play' hoping it may have escaped the editors knife ……… it hasn't. If you know the film, you see Joanna sit up in bed then in the next scene she has her dressing gown on and talking to the maid.

Described on the packaging and Network's website as uncut, but the gorgeous Joanna Lumley scene has been clumsily removed. It's such a pity, because Network seems to be producing good-quality transfers in the original aspect ratio: this gives a film more of a lift than you'd know if you watch it full-screen. I don't understand why it was cut, and I don't trust Network anymore. A lesson: don't buy a Network film until it's been reviewed.

not as good as when I first saw it, and I am sure has parts edited out of the original film.

I needed this because it contains an image of a painting that I'm trying to find, nothing more to say...
