Of course, it’s all on Netflix to watch right now, but I just really wanted to have the DVDs of it too just to complete my collection!
I would recommend if you’re a fan of DVDS or Breaking Bad!
The upsides of Breaking Bad Season 5 include one phenomenal episode featuring a train heist. The episode in which Walter, long-time sidekick Jesse, and new member of the team Todd steal precursor from a train is one of the finer moments of recent television history. It epitomises everything that is so great about the show. It is very clever, an excellent plan well executed. It feels believable as a way of committing a crime by being very smart. It is full of warm cameraderie between the main players involved. They are a team working together on something extraordinary. The relationship between Walter Whyte and the rest of his team works so well. It is an episode strengthened by the action sequences as well as the comedy stylings of the always fun Bill Burr's character Kuby. The episode culminates tragically, taking a moment of jubilation and turning it into something horrifying. Such a fine line to read, a path walked magnificently.
The only other clever part of Season 5 is the new cooking location, a brilliant use of something mundane in SW USA to hide in plain sight. A really good setup as a way to rebuild the meth empire after the death of Gus Fring.
Those are the only two brilliant elements of Season 5. The rest is largely filler, a setup for the final run. The episodes of Season 5 largely focus on Walter and his relationship with his depressed wife Skyler. Compared to the chess match between Walter and Gus in Season 4, the domestic issues are a return to more of a normality. Interesting enough in their own way but a real comedown after the high of the previous battle. Series creator Vince Gilligan described the battle of wits between Walter and Gus as being a chess match, the comparison in this season is perhaps the game of checkers instead.
Part of the reason Season 5 is not as impressive is that the gap left by Gus is not filled. There is a slight sense that Breaking Bad in this season moves away from what made it so great. Sure Walter is the key character but it is the ensemble around him that worked so well. Brilliant characters like Saul have limited screen time. Even Jesse feels more like a minor character here.
The minor character elevated in Season 5 is hard man Mike Ehrmantrout played by Jonathan Banks. Banks is a great actor who brings real pathos. The scenes in which the aspirations he has to provide something meaningful for his granddaughter are really moving. Banks has a presence that fills each scene he is in and he does appear to be a worthy match for the incredible Bryan Cranston. However, Mike just isn't that interesting a foe. Unlike Tuco or Gus, Mike is never really a match for Walter. Walter Whyte as the overdog is an interesting spin but the striving for success against the odds while operating in a world that should not be his just disappears here. Watching Walter winning is not as exciting as his continual plotting his way from crisis to crisis.
Season 5 is also not as funny. There are not many laughs to be had. The one appearance of Badger and Skinny Pete being a clear exception in an hilarious scene in a music store. That scene also showcases the keyboard excellence of Charles Baker. Who knew Skinny Pete was such a great musician?
The morality involved is a lot blunter in Season 5. Really bad things happen. Lots of people are killed including a boy. Things have become more evil. This appears to in part be an attempt to bolster Walter Whyte's alter-ego Heisenberg and to position him as a godfather type figure. These sorts of characters are popular but Heisenberg as a kingpin is nowhere near as interesting as Water Whyte scrabbling his way up the ladder against the odds.
Compared to previous seasons, one thing Season 5 gets very right is the DVD Extras. They are really good. There is decent talking head analysis of each episode including from the main cast and Vince Gilligan. There is also a gag reel which isn't really very funny, and some technical expositions of main stunts. The train episode gets an extended look and what a piece of writing, directing, and camera work that episode is.
Season 5 is filler. It is a placeholder until the final sequence of events to come. It was originally markted as being the final season so mis-sold. There are many good things about the season but it is the weakest set of episodes in this amazingly brilliant tv show. Had this really been the final season and so combined with the final set of episodes it could well have been excellent but as it is, this set is merely ok.
Despite popular belief, this isn't half a season, or season 5.1 or a rip off. This is Season 5. AMC (the shows producers) have referred to this as Season 5 for some time now, and the packaging has stated its season 5 - and containing 8 episodes. There is no excuse for assuming that Breaking Bad concludes with this season, the information has been in the Amazon description for a long time. Price wise, I paid £17 for this - its now dropped to £15. It contains 8 episodes, 5 less than seasons 2-4 and 1 more than season 1. Dexter season 7, just released, contains 12 episodes and cost me £27 on the day of release. So, you actually get more bang for your buck with Breaking Bad. The conclusion to the series is another 8 episodes, and is being referred to as 'The Final 8' If this was just 1 full season, it would be 16 episodes long - personally, I find the pace much better suited to 2 shorter seasons. The impact of the cliffhanger at the end of season 5 is doubled by the year long wait to find out what happens next, and I think that single handedly justifies the split.
Sorry about that, back to the DVD.
Breaking Bad Season 5 is heavy. Walter White's transformation into the Heisenberg is almost complete. He is more than a drug producer, much more than a drug dealer. He is a drug lord. Season 5 deals with Walter becoming his own man, flexing his own ego. And its all about ego for Walter - its not about the money anymore, he is power hungry. He demands respect, he orchestrates murders from the comfort of his kitchen and starts to dismantle anything that can bring him down. I can't say much more without spoilers.
Its a weighty 8 episodes - they are intense, draining and utterly engrossing. Lots happen, some huge chunks of the story are worked out in this season - i'd say the go over more ground in these 8 episodes in all of season 1 and 2. They have a big back story to rely on, and they know fans of the show well enough, to know they don't need reminding who is who - they jump right back into the action. No 'previously on Breaking Bad', no time wasted filling the uninitiated in.
A note on the style of the show. Since the show started, the creators have given the look of the show a slight artistic flair, a real filmic quality. But with season 5 they lay it on thick - almost every shot can be savoured and enjoyed. The opening of the final episode maybe highlights this best - a meeting in the desert, that could easily look dull, is shot in wonderful orange light with bright blue skies. Or during the prison scene when its cuts to Walter, stood as a silhouette in his kitchen (very reminiscent of the Godfather)
The DVD is packed full of extras - extended scenes and inside looks, but most notably the ever insightful commentary and an additional 8 minutes, that actually does add to the story. For me, I had already seen Breaking Bad before I bought the DVDs, but the extra's and specifically the commentary had me clicking the 'add to basket' button. Breaking Bad have become increasingly generous with the extras, both in how many extra hours you get, but also the content. Vince Gilligan is very insightful when it comes to describing exactly why he did what where, and to be honest its a joy to get the extra insight. Season 5 is no exception - maybe the most interesting set of commentaries yet.
With season 5, you get some of the best 8 hours of TV made, until the series is concluded that is - and a cliffhanger which will knock you out.
The extras on most of the discs are great, too, although the sound and pictures of these are 2nd-rate. The menus could have been better, too, but overall, the best drama I've ever seen. Better than The Bridge and The Killing, which are excellent, too.
Final tip is that when watching them, on the later discs, you can start to watch the next episode (for a second or two) and then pause it. If you then turn off your BluRay and go to bed, you can pick up there the next day without having to go through all the menus. Don't know if this is a later development and if it's now a standard but I found it very useful.
Anyway, just buy the whole series now and watch it over the winter (we're now watching it now for the second time and it's still as good as the first time).
