The product arrived on time but in a I severely cracked case. I haven't sent it back because it's just before Christmas so I'll find another case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Breaking Bad: The Original Score 28 Aug. 2012
By JMM - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Breaking Bad has always used music extremely well. This album features the score by Dave Porter - his original compositions are used in many of the most important scenes of the show. Mr. Porter's music helps define the show and always seems to place us into the world we see on the screen. The style of the music perfectly captures the vast open landscapes of New Mexico and the downward spiral of meth addiction.

The album begins with an extended version of the Breaking Bad main title theme, and then progresses with music from the entire series (including two tracks from the fifth season). There are some really great cues throughout the album - "Gray Matter" and "Hank in Pursuit" are among my favorites.

The score certainly works well within the context of the television series, but not all of it is particularly exciting to listen to on its own. However, if you love the show as I do then the music will often take you back to your favorite scenes: examples include the tracks "Crawl Space" and "Parking Garage Standoff", both of which were used at key moments in Season 4.

This album contains 20 tracks totaling approximately an hour of music. It comes highly recommended to fans of Breaking Bad; but because this is very different than most traditional film/television scores, you may wish to sample the music before buying. If you're looking for an album with a mix of songs and score, then try Music from the Original Series Breaking Bad.

EDIT: Volume 2 of the score has now been released, and it's just as good as the first album: Breaking Bad: Original Score From The Television Series Volume 2

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic stuff, but know what you're getting. 30 Aug. 2012
By Sean B. Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
First off, this is an album completely of score. Not traditional "songs" in the typical sense. I realize the title of it says that, but some people can be idiotic.

This is some pretty moody stuff. Most of it is fairly melancholy, but then there are tracks that REALLY step it up and get your heart pumping. There's also some really creepy ones. You can't really beat the creepiness of "Disassemble." Puts me right back into that scene from the show. It isn't JUST creepy, it's kind of beautiful and sad as well. Such a unique track.

If I had to pick a favorite, it'd probably be "Aztek." That track goes from breakneck pace to a slow almost-lullaby, back to breakneck, and then finally creepy. Some real variety in just that one track, and it's one of a couple that do that. It's hard to deny the awesomeness of the track "Crawlspace" as well. There's a few reasons that many people viewed Crawlspace as their favorite episode of the show. For me, the music was at least 50% of that reason. It accentuated those scenes perfectly. Fair warning though, if you're listening through headphones with the volume cranked up, the end of that track can make your head explode from loudness (and intensity).

If there were one track painfully missing from this album, it would be the score from the heist sequence from season 5's "Dead Freight." That was an awesome one, and I'm sad it's not on here. Perhaps there will be a second score album some day?

You know, listening to this outside of the context of the show, I can't help but think of how well these tracks would fit a video game. Perhaps a horror game, or at least one that's got some weird stuff happening. If Mr. Porter reads this, he should consider giving that a shot. Breaking Bad is ending soon, and I think it would fit his style perfectly. Then again, I imagine he'll have any number of other offers for tv and film after this.

I wish the digital copy were available through Amazon. I had to taint my PC with The Program That Shall Not Be Named in order to get the album. Promptly removed it afterwords, of course. It was worth it though.

Excellent album. If I were DMing a pen and paper RPG I would consider using this as background music. It would sure add some awesome atmosphere.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Tense Atmospheric Score With Great Precision & An Intricate Structure 5 Oct. 2012
By Kaya Savas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Breaking Bad is one of TV's best shows on right now. In its run it has collected lots of Emmy's and praise along the way. With the final season underway we finally get a release of Dave Porter's excellent score. Porter has intricately weaved a unique and identifying soundscape within the show over the years. The show's music strives in its subtlety as the character moments shine within the tense textures he builds sonically. Atmosphere and mood are a huge part of why the score works so well as the music slowly draws the audience into the moment.

The music in Breaking Bad flows in a fluid-like fashion, which sets it apart from most scores where the music enters an a given point and exits from another. This score works itself slowly in and builds an incredible amount of tension and drama through Porter's signature soundscape. You barely can tell when the score is working and I mean that in the highest compliment. The music becomes part of the soundscape and part of the characters. It exists within the universe of Breaking Bad and finally audiences can appreciate the intricate details of this well executed score as a standalone listen. When listening your mind really does become absorbed by it, everything else around you drowns out and you become enveloped in the story. While it's hard to grasp the narrative from the music in this single album you can definitely feel the presence of Walter's character as well as the other themes Porter wrote for other characters. There is a primal human instinct behind the music, and its electronic feel helps enhance the primal nature as things spiral down to the belly of the whale. Once the experience is over you feel the music release you and the feeling lingers.

Breaking Bad's score works with precision and never does more than it needs to. With that subtle precision Dave Porter was able to craft an atmospheric flowing score with an intricate structure. The textures are rich and complex and there is plenty to dive into musically. Tones, sounds, solo instruments and electronic layers all work beautifully to craft a score that will linger with you. The characters echo through it, but it's the dramatic tension that truly shines through the music. An amazing release for one of the best shows on TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only one complaint...I want more of it! 12 Oct. 2012

So, I'll be blunt and to the point. I mainly like one type of music : original score. There are other artists out there who I like, listen to, and respect, but 99% of the time, I'm listening to a score. Must I say WOW what a good score this is - and for a tv series too! (A fantastic one at that). The opening title tells you that you're in for some non-traditional kind of music, which sometimes isn't a bad thing. Here's a rundown of my favorite cues :

Breaking Bad - Main Title Theme (Extended), as reviewed above.

Matches In The Pool - played early in season one, as walt sits at the pool, figuring out what to do now that he'll probably be dead within a year, or two. Very calm, and sombery at the same time.

Smoking Jesse's Pot - seems like something you'd hear in a typical stoner movie, but still pretty damn awesome.

Grey Matter - Played during a flashback in early season one. Very moody, and eerie.

Baby's coming - very tense, and fast paced, but you're also worried about time running out for an important thing (Much like in the episode itself).

Jane's Demise - once again, very somber, and one of the standout cues in the series.

Hank In Pursuit - actually an amalgamation of cues, this plays as Hank becomes more and more desperate to figure out just who this "Heisenberg" is.

Crawl Space - Frantic, and fast paced.

Dissassemble - Moody, quiet, with an interesting ending.

These are imo, the standout cues of the album (not that any are at all bad, very worth the low asking price of amazon). Buy it, and let's hope for a second CD full of score, and left off cues from the series,

5.0 out of 5 stars Stands On It's Own 15 Feb. 2013

Even if you've never seen the show, this is an interesting collection of acoustic/electronic/ambient pieces that stand on their own. Dave Porter has managed to conjure up the "feel" of New Mexico in many of the pieces (though not as overtly as say, Steve Roach may have done) and you will understand what I mean if you've been there. As a composer and sound designer I can especially appreciate the work that went into this.
