Lots of blood and guts in a tartan lined sword and sandals epic, big on gore, small on historic accuracy. So it depends what you want. Mel Gibson plays William Wallace, Scottish upstart who dares to rebel against the dastardly English for killing his wife. Lots of two dimensional characters are offset by some really good action scenes, all overlaid with more claret than Tarantino. A bit schmaltzy in places, and perhaps a bit too long, but definitely watchable.

Blu-Ray version is faultless and if, like me, you saw it at the Cinema back in 1996, you'll love watching this.

Ok so there are holes all over the story and re-watching 22 years later doesn't make some of the accents (and acting, sorry!) any less cheesy but the sentiment, the underlying theme and truth of the nature of colonisation and subjugation of a people make it an epic film.
