Epilating (my legs) is virtually a pain free affair now. The design itself is very ergonomic and lightweight and definitely a lot less noisy than my previous one (my mister once barged into the bedroom wondering what that awful sound was).
The epilator head glides over the contours of my legs and makes this (unpleasant) job very easy and quick (less than 10 min to do both lower legs). The smartlight is brilliant at revealing any hairs that you might have missed out. Charging time is also very quick (+/- 1 hr), and means you don't have to deal with any annoying cords or be close to a plug socket (hello bathroom).
The device itself comes with a variety of attachments, which are all interchanged with ease (also means you can give it a good clean). There's obviously the extra wide epilator head which also comes with a skin contact cap if you want to reduce the area that is being tackled. There's a shaving head and trimmer (for the more sensitive area's you might be afraid to tackle with an epilator), I was pleasantly surprised by this added bonus, I honestly didn't expect it to give the same result as a gilette razor. There's an exfoliation head with two brushes (one for the body and a softer one for the face) - I've tried both, again pleasantly surprised and as I was meaning to buy myself a facial brush anyway, this is a cost I now no longer need to make (using the exfoliator on the face is not the most pleasant of sensations though, I find the vibration quite a weird feeling). There's two speed settings, speed 1 one for gentle epilation and speed 2 for a faster, more efficient epilation (I usually go for speed 2 but that might be because I'm very much used to epilating). Also, I personally prefer to use it dry as I feel it gives you a better finish, but I do tend to use the exfoliator brushes in the shower or bath.
Please note that the adapter that comes with the product is a two pin (European) plug so you will need plug converter in order to charge it.
The bag that comes with the product is quite small and might rip if you try to put both the device as well as all the accessories and the adapter in it - so I put it in a bigger bag of better quality. Two days after I made the purchase (for £109 minus a £5 voucher - free next day Amazon Prime delivery) Amazon decided to lower the price to £79.99 (which was slightly upsetting was it not that I had already tried it out and was thoroughly impressed). Despite these (minor) gripes I would still rate this product 5 stars and recommend it to anyone in search of smooth, hair free legs (might tackle my underarms at one point but right now that scares the bejesus out of me).
If you are used to waxing (and I only waxed approx twice a year - my legs) then you probably won't have any problem with pain. However I did use the more gentle head the first time, in the shower, on the slowest setting, which reduces any pain. Thereafter immediately changed to the more thorough head at full power, but also in the shower. Dry epilation is definitely a bit more painful but needed as a few hairs are often missed. My daughter, who does not wax, only managed about an inch on each leg and gave up in agony.
With other reviewers saying that the battery only lasts for about 40 minutes, I was more worried about the hot water running out than the battery life. One negative is the light which is (a) not particularly bright and (b) far more irritating, you cannot shine the light without the horrible screech of the motor running. If you are wanting to check over your legs it really grates on your nerves, plus is a waste of battery power.
I was initially delighted with the results and would occasionally run my hands over my legs to see how they were doing. After about two weeks I had a closer look and noticed that I had loads of hairs approx 2 or 3 mm long which hadn't broken the surface of my skin and were growing in a flat line just beneath it. Hence "ingrowing" in inverted commas. Not your standard ingrowing hairs. I never encountered this problem when waxing. I had to scrape my skin with my nail in order for the hair to be released. I followed all instructions regarding exfoliation so I don't know the reason for it. I have used it several times since, usually about once a week now, and the problem hasn't gone away although there are fewer of them.
Now, upper lip hair! Proceed with caution! I did thank heavens. First of all, I highly recommend using some Emla cream first which is a numbing cream available over the counter in chemists. You'll need it on for about an hour beforehand. I decided to try a small area first, about a quarter of my top lip (obviously not my actual lip) and used the more gentle exfoliator. For some unknown reason about half that area got cut in such a way that it looked like a carpet burn. It took several days for it to scab and heal and I was just grateful that it wasn't too awful and could be covered up with make up. As half the area was fine I persevered and epilated the rest over three days. No problems at all. I have done it once again since (bit of a faff in four goes, but better safe than sorry) and again no problems. Oh, and put Aloe Vera gel on the area afterwards. With the Emla, virtually no pain at all.
The two exfoliation brushes I personally think are a waste of time (and battery). Despite the blurb I cannot see how they are any more effective than an exfoliation glove. Takes a lot longer too. Personally I would much prefer the manufacturers to include a facial hair head which would presumably be much smaller and less scary than the one you have to use. (I see some people have said that there should be one included, but I haven't read that anywhere). And put in a more powerful light which can be turned on without the motor running. Another area they could improve would be to have and easier to manipulate switch, probably just one that sticks out more. The shaver also is a bit of a gimmick. If you have really long hair then it would be useful to use the first time to get them down to a length that can be epilated. But after that, when are you going to use it again?
Hope this is helpful!
All in all would actually highly recommend if you don't want to have to look like a hairy beast for weeks at a time.
Having said that, I am quite disappointed by this particular Braun epilator. When I first got it, I thought, this is far better than anything I’ve ever tried. I mean, it’s wireless, it’s fast, it’s got amazing attachments – what’s not to like?
However, upon using it for a while, I noticed that the hair is coming back more quickly than with the older models. The reason for this is that this epilator is so fast, it actually makes pulling the hairs from the root less efficient.
Secondly, it only works for 30-40 minutes at a time. So if you are looking to do everything all at once, you may not be able to finish in one go. To make matters worse, it doesn’t let you use it while it’s charging. On top of all, the battery started to get worse fast only after a few months.
The worst part is, the epilator broke in about 9-10 months. I got a replacement with a brand new one, and the new one broke in less than 6 months.
Now, having used Braun for so long, I have to say I had never had an epilator break down on me, ever. I always replaced them after a couple of years, simply because I wanted a newer one, but never because they stopped working. So, having this model break twice in less than two years is quite bad.
I have since reverted to using my older Braun model and having no issues.
