After their stripped back acoustic album Wireless, the Blues band's next release was a very different affair. Including a brass section they added a new layer to the music, making a richer, more colourful sound that gave them lots of room to play around and make some great music.

Including elements of swing, trad jazz, soul and, of course, blues, this is a musically diverse album which successfully synthesises all its elements into one pleasing whole. Paul Jones vocals are well suited to this rich musical style, and the rest of the band work well with Dave Kelly especially. providing some interesting guitar work.

A fascinatingly inventive album that steps out of the band's main `zone' and works very well with a set of sweeping, up tempo brass arrangements. Material ranges from covers to self penned, all of which reflects the band's wry humour and warm personalities. Standout of the self penned stuff has to be `Got to be the blues', a fun track that is guaranteed to sit eternally on your playlists. With some real foot tapping tunes this is an entertaining album.

I have several other Blues Band albums, and was expecting blues with brass. On the whole I was disappointed and in retrospect wished I'd passed by the opportunity to buy this title cheaply and bought another Blues Band album I don't own. It too 'big band'.

The LP 'Brand Loyalty' had shown that this was a band who were great with brass, so it was no surprise that they've done it again albeit on a larger scale. Now this is NOT a typical album from the Blues Band, and if like me you like their early stuff then it takes a little getting used to. But it's a great anniversary album because it shows that even after 20 years they're still trying new things and going forward. It contains some witty vocals, some superb guitar work (especially Dave Kelly on 'Swing Out Dave')and some really splendid trumpet playing (check out the under-rated Raul D'Olivera's solo on '2K Shuffle'). In Paul Jones' 'Got to be the Blues' they've given blues fans everywhere a witty and singable anthem. I might even ask for it to be played at my funeral. Since this band will still be playing when they're all in they're 80s perhaps they'd do it live for me....

This CD does not disappoint. The usual creative mixture of covers and originals, released just after the band's 20th anniversary. As you would expect the arrangements are tight and the addition of the brass section refreshes the overall sound. Look out for "Swing Out Dave" and Got To Be The Blues" among the highlights. Paul Jones' vocal on Cutis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" is superb even by his high standards. Clever modulation on the instrumental "2K Shuffle" makes you think that the band have just gone up a tone when in fact they've gone down. Oh - and it's a great album for dancing around the lounge to with your excited children!
