Product Description

Review

'His [Plowright's] warmth and sincerity combine with a superbly assured and powerful technique to create one of the finest performances on record …I can scarcely wait for further volumes from this pianist, adding that both the piano concertos positively cry out or his attention.' --Gramophone Choice, February 2013, Bryce Morrison

'Jonathan Plowright is a pianist who always excites…his range seems limitless. Here he turns his forensic eye on Brahms's mightiest sonata, No. 3, Op. 5, gripping us from the start…He pairs this definitive reading with the quicksilver delights of the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24 a dazzling showcase for his superb talent.' --The Observer, Stephen Pritchard, 13/01/2013

'Jonathan Plowright's brilliant new release on BIS is certainly one of the best recordings of the sonata to date. He has achieved a near-ideal realization of a work often considered a triumph of musical imagination in the abstract but, in practical application, a virtual impossibility.' **IRR OUTSTANDING** --International Record Review, March 2013

'The fine singing tone and beautiful chordal playing that are his [Plowright's] trademarks can be heard on this disc, finely projected in a superlative recording…his is piano playing that very few British pianists can match today.' --Pianist Magazine, April/May 2013

'Jonathan Plowright's performance has tremendous warmth, plus an intimate atmosphere…it is the strength of his underlying conviction that makes this such an admirable recording, enhanced by surround sound.' --BBC Music Magazine, April 2013

This arrived 3 days ago. I bought it on the basis of Radio 3's very encouraging CD review programme on Saturday. I'm so pleased I did. The sonata is expansive and thunderous in the first movement then suitably introspecive in the second. His playing is truely noble and never vulgar or braying. His tone is warm and this is now the best of my many recordings of this work. The Handel variations are precise but not 'prissy' as too many pianists initially make them. They evolve naturally and lets hope that he can can keep this standard up in future releases. During the programme Jonathan tweeted to Andrew macGregor that this is the beginning of a complete cycle. I do hope that he records the piano concertos, as his playing would ideally suit them - perhaps with Rattle .!!

Wonderfully insightful and virtuosic playing. Outstanding recording. Why has Plowright not been more in the public eye? Let's have more from this source
